General Tyre Rumbling/Noisy - Increases noise with speed

Hi

I haven't had an issue with the Stilo for a while but I have recently had a louder road noise coming from one of my tyres than I normally would (and any of the others).

It gets louder with speed and doesn't sound like a wheel bearing. I have had the brake caliper on the NSR changed last week and the garage changed the tyres around. It now sounds like the noise is coming from where that tyre has been moved to so seems obvious it would be the tyre?

They checked for wheel bearings and the brakes but couldn't find anything amiss.

My question is, can a tyre make this kind of noise? They are budget tyres but defintiely seems wheel/tyre related in terms of noise.

I am going to get a new tyre but just wanted to check before I shell out hard earned money and the noise persists afterwards!

I don't think it is a wheel bearing as it gets more high pitched as you drive and when you come to a standstill at a junction it is definitely speed related.

My hunch would be if you can't find anything amiss with the bearings or brakes then perhaps it'san out of balance wheel? But this wouldn't be more like wobbling through the steering wheel so I doubt it's that. So what I think it might be is the fact the tyres were swapped about then you've got a higher tread tyre on that corner than the rest. The more tread a tyre has the more noise it makes, so I'm led to believe anyway...

Get all four tyres checked for consistent tread depth/ wear and see if anything seems awry with that, that's my best advice

Most Budget tyres are always noisy in my opinion, you said they swapped wheels, maybe also worth checking they have not got directional tyres running the wrong way.

I vote tires as well. I had Nokian winter tires which are pretty good, but because they had some large grooves here and there, once it got hotter and the rubber softer, I could hear strong vibrations starting with 50 km/h up to 100. They would get noisier and noiser and after that, nothing. Then I swapped back to my all season Falkens and the noise went bye bye.

I too thought I had bearing problems, as the noise for some reason was louder in the back than in the front.

Check every wheel just to be safe, but if your tires are new, 90% it's them.

Try the spare wheel on the noisy side.

I had a similar problem many years ago and I eventually tracked it to a bulge in the tyre tread. I only found the fault when I took the wheel off to inspect the suspension for the umpteenth time and rolled the wheel a couple of feet across the driveway and it suddenly veered to one side due to the deflection from the bulge. Once I knew it was there it was hard to believe I hadn't spotted it before, but the fact is when it was on the car it just wasn't obvious.

I was lucky it didn't lead to a blow out so check yours carefully.

Mine do this, Triangle tyres, Cheap tyres sound like an old Mk3 transit with too much diff play.
Also my friend has a BMW that came with cheap tyres on, it sounded like diff worn or wheel bearing, and finally Bro in laws car, could of sworn it needed a wheel bearing but nope, new tyres then went super silent.

Agree with cris1117. Try the spare. Also worth having a good look around the wheel arch and also at the wheel mount behind the tire to see if anything is catching. Had a Skoda make some right strange noises once when a stick got trapped in the brake hose behind the tire and was catching the tire wall.
