Both of us, as well as all the different apparently conflicting articles, are right! And without your post I'd never have got to this conclusion & discovered the real truth - so thanks (y).

As someone else said recently, this forum can accomplish great things when its members work cooperatively together :):).

Exactly. That's exactly why I was so bemused at what's happened recently on here.

At the end of the day it really doesn't matter who is wrong or right, as long as people get the best information and we learn something :)

By the way they are offering me 8000 euros for my 15 month old fiat 500 1.4 bought for like 18,000 euros if i part exchange it for a new TA.

I guess i'll stick with the 1.4
I am not surpirsed becuase this is the same dealer that tried charging me 320 euros for my first 18k miles service! Its a shame that they are the one nearest to my house!
I am going to the test drive anyway to have a laugh and see what this TA everyone talking about is!

You should better try to sell it on your own and not to your dealer. This is the case always.

No i will just keep my current car until it dies = ) No need to sell it and lose money for getting a model that may have a more fun engine, but on paper is slower and worse with not that much better fuel economy!

To be honest i just did this excercise because i was curious to actually how much i would lose by making the change. As it turns out, quite a lot!

That'd give anyone a 'bad spreadsheet day' :mad:.

Actually i will tell the dealer after test driving the car that i wanted to service my car there but they offered me 320 which was 70 more than competing fiat dealers and they refused to lower the price. i will say if this is how you do business, how will you make any money at all?
No wonder dealers are closing and they arnet selling cars!
Its not only a lack of money in the country, but people taking advantage of other peoples money!

Although you always have stupid consumers who never look at the figures, the type of person maxi always enjoys making fun of!

The price that the dealer offered is just fine considering it as a "wholesale" price because the dealer wants to make some profit obviously. For my Beetle (2007 model ,full extra, 1.4 convertible 57000 km) the dealer made an offer of 8000 euro (22500 euro is what i paid) and this was the reason why i decided to sell it on my own. I can tell that i was amazed with my patience (7.5 months needed in order to find a buyer) but in the end i made it :D. Finally, 2 months ago i sold it for 11200 :). A 15 months old car is still new or may i say brand new? No need to sell it and i totally agree with your final decision. Although, in case that you change your mind think about the fiat dealer i bought mine. (Excellent service - delivery time as promised - an extra discount even if i chose this 0% interest loan - some extras offered)

I forgot to mention the 5 years or 60k km free service that this specific dealer offers. The real reason that lead me to choose this dealership was the fact that they offered a spare car just for 270 euro comparing it to the 900+ i needed if i wanted to rent one for 50 days.

Ok guys i test drove the TA over about 9 miles alone without the dealer man, so i drove it the way i wanted to in traffic and on the highway coming to 70 mph in 3rd before i couldnt go faster. First impression, feels like a diesel with the amazing torque with evo turned off! It just pulls a lot untilll...... *it doesnt let you go above 6000 rpm at all it just dies whereas the 1.4 na goes to 7250!!! I would say acceleration at low speeds is easily better than 1.4 but then when TA *runs out of steam in the higher range 1.4 says goodbye mr. Bond!*
The brakes of the 1.4 are noticably better at high speeds so shame on you fiat with the stingy rear drums TA style!*

Fuel? I did 7.6l/100 km which, considering my route of higjway and a lot of athens style traffic driving is really not bad. I did eco during civilized deiving and no eco during boy racer driving.
*I think overall 45 mpg would be the norm with me, so 20% better than 1.4 and free road tax.

The 1.4 feels a much more rewarding car to drive so sorry eco fetish people but i will pay more to keep my old school na 1.4 for the ultimate sporty feel. Mr. Turbo can give me as many explosions it likes but a real drivers car must be NA for me. I hope they continue to exist in the coming future.*

Yes TA is free 1.2 is 120 and 1.4 is 264 according to the 2012 road tax figures. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm let me see what my dealer is offering (depending on how desperate he is to sell cars)

A little update on the Budget in Ireland. As expected increases in Petrol & Diesel 1.4c & 1.6c with it going up to 4c in the new year when the 2% vat increase applies.
For those on Band A (less than 120grs) and Band B (120-140grs/km) have been hit the hardest on the car tax increases...
Band A gone from €104-> €160 (this is the TA & 1.2)
Band B gone from €156-> €225 (Euro 5 1.4)
Band C gone from €302-> €330 (141-155grs/km covers Euro 4 1.4 & A500)

This means that a Euro 4 1.4 is affected the least and will help secondhand values. So before the car tax on a 1.4 was 3 times that of 1.2 / TA it is now just half.

The highest band has gone by just 7% which is at €2,258. Some people who bought Band A & Band B cars aren't too happy even though it's still 'cheap'.

No tax breaks in relation to car tax came in for the Twin Air with a sub 100 'band'.

The new Chrysler Ypilson (saw one in the flesh last Monday in my favourite dealers forecourt) - only just in - it does not come with a 1.4 engine. IMHO if you had to have a 4 door 500 this might be a good choice.

Enjoyed your update on the TA. Really surprised at how much €€€ you've lost on the 1.4 over the last 18 months. It often takes a drive of another car to appreciate what you have.

Privately my car's similar versions were going for 12,000 euros the dealer doesnt want to do business clearly at least give it for 10,000!
In any case i prefer my 1.4, i consider the TA a 'worse car' than the 1.4, but cheaper to run. Id rather have better and more expensive = )

Here the difference in the new car tax rates on a TA to a Euro 4 1.4 is €170 p.a. reducing to €65 p.a. on a Euro 5 1.4. Both are similarly priced but there are virtually no secondhand ones about. Given my driving style I wouldn't do much better on mpg in the TA but at 6-7K miles p.a. it would not make much difference. The insurance costs are the same. And if a 1.4 is kept upwards of 80K-100K miles cc should win out. The only saving there would be is if it stopped one buying a A500.

Its Lancia Ypsilon.. I didnt know that in Ireland it is selled under the Chrysler brand.

12 months and 10000 miles in. Bit worried at the start, coz all the stuff written was about how the small engine would not cope....

I agree, bottom line is, that if you thrash the arse off it, you will get struggle on MPG.

Boring.

What a fantastic car. Looks brilliant. Sounds even better! It bubbles and gurgles like a playful cat! When my wife is driving and it pulls in front of the house, I open the window just to hear the distinctive sound. Not quite in the Ferrari league, but hey!

The engine is superb. Quick off the mark, sounds great (think I mentioned that) and spins away like the best engines Fiat has ever produced.

Faults? A few.. Throttle response is a bit slow. Heated seats and cruise control would have been nice. It is a bit bouncy in the back!

But as for MPG... On a motorway trip, at 70 mph, over 100 miles = 66mpg. Round town - approx 42mpg. Not impressed? Compared to the 'official' mpg not good.. But I've got a 1.5 renault desiel car, and used to have a 1.6 citreon diesel and a 1.8 Ford, and I will tell you now that the Twin Air is as good as, and is even better than, all the rest. What is more - none of them can hold a candle to the sound that the Twin Air makes. No contest.....

So you covered over 100miles at around 70mph and got 66mpg....That's fantastic, as I see it.

I couldn't get close to that in my 1.2, which in my opinion gives good economy.

Flaming hell! After reading your post I checked out car tax in Ireland.
€2100 for cars over 225g/km!!:eek:
My caravelle would cost €1050. What are you supposed to do if you have a large family? BONKERS!
