Our leggy (121k) 4x4 Twin Air has had a tank of fuel’s worth of use since we got it. The odd run, and latterly taking my learner Son out for driving practice on a handful of occasions. It’s early days so lots of stalling and restarting the engine.

Today I noticed the engine warning light came on the dash. Car still appears to be running OK. I connected Multiecuscan. I initially got “ECU code 32 83 5B 8A EF”. I tried to connect to the engine- tried all 5 options of the 0.9 TA but none would connect. Battery was a bit low (12.3v) so I’ve stuck that on charge.

Any suggestions on:

a) how to get Multiecuscan to connect to the engine?
b) what the 32 83 5B 8A EF code means
c) Any other investigations I should do?

Thanks!

Battery Fully Charged. Still getting engine warning light and hazard light, with messages “STARTSTOP UNAVAILABLE” and “CHECK ENGINE” on the top of the display 😬

You need to get MES properly connected to the car. This means using the test connection setting in MES to make sure the device you are using to connect to the OBD port is working correctly. Then try connecting to the ECU. The code you have shown is not a vaild DTC, they will always start with a letter, e.g., “P” for powertrain, “B” for body computer, etc.

The battery may be the problem depending on age.

It's been established by several others here that if the car battery is anything less than tip-top, error codes read with MES can be misleading... if the voltages are lower than they should be (owing to battery being poor), then sensors tend to see lower values than expected, causing an 'error' to show that's not really there. Stop/Start not available is a big clue that the battery isn't in the best of health. Modern stop/start batteries don't really take a charge properly from an external charger...

Fully charged, battery will show 12.8v (with engine off). 12.2 v = battery shot... further evidence :)

Try Tayna Batteries online (tayna.co.uk) - best prices I've found and next day delivery to the door.

New battery fitted and still getting the engine warning light, hazard triangle and check engine/stop start message.

I’ve tried to connect again to MES, will connect for service etc. but can’t connect on the engine section. Not sure which of the 5 options is the correct one, but none appear to connect. I get the error message below.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I believe CF5 is euro 5 engine and CF6 is euro 6. You don’t want the last option as that is for LPG only. If you can connect to some other modules but none of the four engine options then I would suspect your ELM lead or connectors as it should connect to one of them. What other modules can you connect to?

Just tested:
None of the engine options connect.
ABS doesn’t connect.
Electric steering doesn’t connect
Gearbox doesn’t connect (4x4 coupling control)
Climate control doesn’t connect (I don’t think it’s fitted)
Other doesn’t connect (parking sensors- not fitted)
Airbag will connect
Dashboard connects
Body connects
Service connects

I’m not really sure what should and shouldn’t connect to be honest so wasn’t sure is it was an interface issue…

Use "SEARCH for Devices,"

It will find all the various kit on the car🙂

Which cable are you using.. Check with the MES Supported Vehicle list 😉

So do you have an adapter connected to the ELM device? To access the ECU you don't need any of the coloured adapters, just the ELM327 lead on its own. Just try that and see how you get on.
Perfect, thanks. Removed the yellow adapter and managed to connect to ‘Engine’ on MES.
Showing P0054-62 Lambda Sensor Resistance..
I cleared the error. I’ll see if it returns. In the meantime, I probably need to see if that’s going to hamper an MOT pass on emissions 😬

Wait and see if it shows up again, could well have been down to a poor battery which you have now changed. If it does fault with this code again, you need to check the wiring to the O2 sensor. If that looks ok it may need a new one. The car would likely not pass an emissions check if that is not operating correctly...

Did the light ever return?
