Hot hatch or slow, smelly diesel?

Your opinions please before I buy it.

smell Diesel

I'd say smelly diesel...but I'm biased against diesels...as Jeremy Clarkson said they are only for farm machinery (or reps!!).

General

As a general response to whether diesels can be hot hatches, note that VW make a Golf GTI turo diesel that is quicker than the petrol version, and Jaguar are developing a new diesel engine. The days of smokey clattery sluggish diesels are gone. Driven properly, a modern turbo diesel can be a very quick car!

Specifically, is a Bravo 100TD a hot hatch? Couldn't say for sure but its pretty quick. The JTD is supposed to be better, and thats chipable too! The best way to be sure is to have a go in one.

Thanks very much, think I'll take one for a blast.

Total Tortoise!

Dont forget you will have to put up with the following

1. Slow response until the turbo cuts in
2. You will smell (even after wearing gloves) each time you fill up
3. It is still noisier - there is no argument
4. Servicing intervals are shorter (OK not that much different on the Fiats)
5. Watch out for increasing legislation on diesels

Other things like you have to have a bigger engine to get the same performance as a smaller engined petrol version.

The main reason the Golf GTi Diesel is quicker is because VW are trying to market their diesel engine in that way. They could make the GTi petrol a lot quicker but it wouldn't sell the other cars.

I have tried a diesel for 3 months a few years ago as a hack (Vectra td) but it smelt, I stank after each fill up as the spilt diesel gets on your shoes and the service interval was only 6,000 miles. No thank you, not again

Cheers

Yes, but...

..it was a Vauxhall TD and they were shite even for diesels!

The service interval is 12000 same as a petrol, except you need an oil change at 6000 - a so called interim service, and I don't smell of diesel after filling it up.

The turbo cuts in at about 2300 rpm so theres not much waiting, and its OK below that.

Noisy. Can't argue with that sir, but its only noisy on the outside! Its quieter on the motorway due to the lower rpm compared with a petrol.

But each to his/her own. I've had many years of diesel service and they don't go wrong, unlike many of the petrol vehicles I've had. And I only have to fill up every 500 miles.

I agree

I have a bravo JTD and wouldn't swop it for any other car in it's class. It's quicker than the 1.6sx, and only slightly slower than the 1.8. OK it's true, it a slug in 1st and you have to floor it to kick-in the turbo in 2nd, but then it takes off! I'd love a HGT, but then I wouldn't love spending twice as much money filling the thing up.

The Fiat diesel engines are sound. Especially, the JTD which is a common-rail, pushing 50+ mpg. It's a little noiser than a petrol, not a lot, emmissions are very similar to a petrol engine. ;)

Diesels

I owned a Tipo 1.7DS and it was of the old school of diesels....slow, smelly and sluggish, but VERY economical, which was what I wanted @ the time. I traded it in 4 a Punto 1.7TDSX and that was a blinding car. I got caught speeding in it and the fuzz averaged me out @ 98.7mph, so i just escaped a ban !! LOL
Well, I bought that car new in 95 so things have improved technology wise and I've seen this new Golf TDI and they reckon it certainly shifts. Also, Peugeot have released a diesel variant of their 406 Pininfarina styled Coupe and that goes nicely.

Best thing 2 do is take 1 4 a spin, and make ur own mind up :)

Cheers,

Rob.

derv

I drive a JTD powered fiat. I dont reek of diesel because I put diesel in the tank not on my shoes (duh
) also it goes like poo of a very geasy shovel, sounds roarty and does 50-60 mpg. These units are also bullet proof providing you have it serviced (cheap). As for the Bravo diesel being a hot hatch it has the pace but the handling doent have the edge like a hot hatch should. But buy it anyway!!!!!!!

bravo diesel

Where do some of you people get your ideas? I've been driving diesels for about 10 years-a Sierra hatch with a 1.8 Janspeed turbo that could hold off nearly anything standard on the road. That engine was then transferred to a Sierra estate with a full bodykit and that kept up the good work.
I now drive a Bravo GT JTD. It leaves the Ford diesel so far behind it's unbelievable. There is no hesitation on takeoff and it has excellent economy. Handling could be a little bit sharper, but I think that's down to Fiat's crappy dampers which seem to lose their heart early on in play.
The diesel on mine goes into the big tank under the body so there is no smell after a fillup. Buy one and you'll understand.

Get it

i have been driving to uni for 2 years now and every day i used to pass a gorgeous bravo. (Heraldic blue, lowered slightly, with nice 15in alloys). the week i was selling my car that bravo was been sold to. i enquired and he told me it was a turbo diesel. i have to be honest i was then put off, but i tried it anyway. it is definitely a fast motor and very nice to drive. its sat on my drive now!!
