Hi,

The Marea needs some new front tyres before i head out to the track next.

i'm looking for a reasonably priced tyre in either 205 or 215/40/17.

last time i went i had a new pair of Toyo T1-R tyres and while grip was never an issue at the end of the day the front left looked like the tread was being torn away, had to explain but it was very odd wear. the front right didnt look much different.

maybe there is a decent budget tyre out there that would hold up alright?

my only concern with budgets is that they will overheat and act more like ice skates as Jamie demonstrated to me previously.

Thanks in advance,

Ry

I'm with you on the Toyo T1R with odd wear, I had a set on the front of a 200bhp Audi A4. After one too many back road journeys my tyres did the same. I've run Goodyear GSD3s recently with similar issues. If the car is going to be for general day to day use as well as track day fun, I'd suggest getting a set of spare front wheels with track specific tyres on and putting a set of whatever matches the back end of your car on the fronts for day to day use.

Track specific tyres are more expensive, but don't fall to bits quite as fast as normal tyres on a high grip track surface. Toyo R888s are the top banana of track tyres I've heard, but they don't last a huge amount of time of heavy cars.

Worst thing about track days is realising your driving home on nearly bald tyres, often vibrating the steering due the amount of abuse they've had.

Go for a second set of wheels says me, cheap and battered is fine, but round and string is needed so go OEM if poss.

Try some sechond hand ones, nearly worn out jobbies, less tread more rubber.

maybe i'm being a little over eager to chuck out my current Toyo's, they are just about on the wear marker from memory, they may well last another day.

thanks for the advice.

the car is a track car only now so not worried about needing the tyres to last for a drive home aswell.

i've read a review of the toyo R888's that said they will only last about a day of abuse which worries me at £140/corner!

i'm going to check out the toyo's that are fitted at the moment and see if they have enough tread to make a day, otherwise i think i might give the hankook's a try that a linked to above.
