hi i have a 1.2 bravo on 51 plate

was told gearbox are risky on these ive done 50k

what can i do to get the best out of the gearbox..

ok drive carefully not erractic..but seriously under the engine what can i do

was told the oil can be looked into
there is a baulk something as well

please advise

i need to look ater it as i dont wish to pay out for a new gearbox so soon

please note im sure the gearbox is soon to go,,someone mentioned the synchro mesh

what is this and how can i do little things to improve it rather than jump to a gearbox..

synchromesh' dont usually go on the 1.2, its normally the diffs

as for prolonging the life of it, drive sensibly, dont accelerate fast from standing starts and dont slam through the gears etc, just be gentle on it and it will be fine

you can change the oil and that should improve gear selection and you will also be able to see if there is any swarf in the box aswell. before you do the change take the car for a short drive to get the oil warmer

you can buy additives to put in gearbox oil, im usually aprehensive with such additives but it worked well for me.

hmm i can use this info what was that baulk thign mentioned?

Baulk thing...??? got a link or anything, dont have a clue what you are on about

how do you change the oil in the gear box or add aditives

ok well i wouldnt bother with bauk...

its alot of hassle really, easier getting a new box tbh

as for the gearbox oil, you need a 12mm sump plug key, take the car for a 10 min or so drive to warm the oil up then jack it up a bit, say 1 notch on te axle stands at the bck of the box, at the bottom of it there is a hex bolt, thast your outlet, drain the oil out then refit plug

then on the front of the box opposite the rad is the fill plug

the 1,2 takes 1.8 litres of box oil, but just keep filling until it starts to spill over and your done :)

I read somewhere that it's a good idea to avoid using the gear selector as an arm wrest or hand support while in drive but thats probably got more to do with damage to the linkages.?
