I really didn't want to take it apart again, I'll attempt to time up the belt better then.

I would still go for valve clearance checking ... takes you 20 minutes, but at least you don't have to take that much apart. Procedure is described in the manual, available in pdf @ downloads section of this forum.
Head gasket position and blocking oil path would make sense on the engine with hydraulic lifters, which 8V doesn't have.
Wrongly timed engine will cause misfire and/or no start, but I can't really see it causing any extra sounds.
Anyhow, the choice is yours and I wish you luck.

PS to others:
No, I'm not arguing the head gasket and other stuff, but I would really appreciate if you would explain the logic behind your thinking (I want to learn also). Thank You in advance.

If the head gasket is put on the wrong way round, then the cam will be starved of oil as it blocks the oil feed to the cylinder head. Any valves that have a larger than normal clearance will make more noise when the eventual lack of lubrication between the cam and shim disappears. It will also create accelerated wear, making the noise louder.

The oil distribution pipe across the top can get damaged or blocked. Might be no harm to take the cover off and see what is or isn't happening in there. Particularly if one end seems dry.

So, do I understand it right that we are back again to valve clearance? What I meant to say is that the same sound could be related to wrong shim sizes (misplaced tappets) and it would only take 20 minutes or so to check valve clearances and see if that is the case, other than cracking the head open again. Not to mention that it will cost you nothing, compared to new head gasket, bolts, etc ...

No, i was replying to your question as to why incorrect gasket orientation can cause oil starvation symptoms and issues.

Thanks for your advice, I'll take a look at the manual regarding valve clearance and take it from there, but if one side seems dry what would that tell me?

There should be enough oil getting up there to lubricate the cam journals and the tappets. If the flow is restricted either from partial blockage or the pipe taking a knock, some parts may not get enough or any oil and it will make noises.
By all means check the valve clearances. Happening so soon after a gasket change oil supply is a more likely than valve clearances suddenly opening up.
I take it you did not remove the camshaft and swap buckets around.
For what it's worth at 127 k miles our valves are still in spec, just and have never been touched.

Yeah, if the buckets are not touched then there is not much of a possibility for clearances to change. I was just assuming that if one is doing head gasket, he/she would do the full head job (valve seals, etc, etc, etc) at the same time. I know you don't need to take off a head to do those, but if the head is off, it is a perfect moment for that work in my opinion. However, if that is not the case, then yeah ... Misplaced gasket ... Likely ... :(

True it is the perfect time to do all those things. Back in the 80s valves closed up faster. Many needed doing annually, some settled down after the first year or two.
Cars have improved a lot. Knowing how to do a valve check shows your age more than anything.
Stem seals or perhaps oils have improved and they don't seem to leak as much as they did on older designs.
At the age these cars are at all of that work will only be done a by an enthusiast. Garage rates would scrap the car more than likely.

I hope it isn't misplaced!
I haven't had much time to go back to it lately, but switched it on again and took the oil filler cap off, there seems to be oil coming through ok, engine still rocks a bit too much and smoke from below manifold still coming out.

I'll attempt it this week.

Thanks
For all your help
