Theremostat/temp gauge

hey, am having probs with my temp guage its never moves above the one notch, but if i leave it running for a long time it moves very slowly and if and depending on the weather it will go to the half way mark if left long enuff, the fan still kicks n still when it gets to the half way mark so am hopign that still good, is there anythign else i shud check before replacing the thermostat ? , how long do you have to have the car running before the needle moves , mine seem to b a very long time

car is a 97 hgt btw
