Anyone put this in to English for me?

We basically have a power problem at one of my offices and it keeps blowing a fuse and flipping the breaker. I got a sparky in to have a look and this is what I get back :p

Firstly the DBs are ancient, but also haven't been tested......the sticker saying the date of the last inspection and states, "not tested 27/5/2003" and "recommended date of next inspection: ASAP". Not good.

Secondly, the circuit tripping out is 2L1, Merlin Geran MCB, 32a type 2 BS3871. There is one spare way on the small power DB, located at 8L3. (24 way DB).

It is feeding an Electrak, which is supplied in 10mm SWA. This as far as I can see supplies 8 positions, half are people with pc, phone, monitor, the other half photocopier, scanner and accessories i.e. Plasma TV. Almost certainly not more than 32A.

Floor access is pretty much a no no, most of it is laminate wood, from the DB up until the desks where it changes to floor pan grid.

Summary:

I think they have either a dodgy piece of kit, or maybe cleaners are plugging in and tripping the circuit, or a member of staff is plugging in something they shouldn't!!

It does not appear to be an overloading issue, when the breaker is off and you try to reset, the breaker will pop immediately sometimes due to the surge of many machines starting at the same time, (This is normal) resetting this a few times could lead to weakening of the MCB and this may now require replacing.

However it would appear that an attempt to carry out a periodic inspection and test was made in 2003 but never carried out, therefore in accordance with Health and Safety guidelines and BS7671 they should now seriously consider budgeting to have this done.

Well in short:

You are well behind with your Health & Safety checks on the electrical side of things so now you are going to have to spend loadsa money to sort it out and get it up to code and there is nothing you can do to stop it because apparently not doing Health & Safety can cause the world to end in an instant!

In more productive terms:

some of your equipment (Cleaning like a hoover or something) may be bust / need PAT testing to see if its tripping your power when it gets plugged in.

The fault isnt due to a surge of power from anything, but it does trip when everything is turned on at the same time, which you would expect. But if you keep tripping/resetting the Main Control Board could get damaged/worn/weak which is bad.

Also you havent been H&S checked in ages, and it needs doing

BASICALLY i think :p

An even shorter and cut down version is:-

It's going to cost some f***ing wedge ;) :p.

You'll end up with some big baldy electrician who will stand there picking fluff out his arse crack and charge you £200 an hr for the privilege.

I've got to deliver a presentation at college based around a secondary school.

One of the areas I need to cover is:

"Explain the school's links to five other services in the area....."

Any suggestions, cos I'm knackered here:confused:

OK here is me having a go :D

1)Any clubs/sports clubs the children at the school go to e.g. football, scouts etc

2)Bus Services that travel to the school

3)School Suppliers, eg Stationary, which supply the school with equipment?

4)possibly the local council/government, with funding, the PTA and the school council?

5) (short on ideas now!) Business/Career Days Talks from local business

Thats all I can think of :(

mobile fiat mechanic

Sitting here car needs a concentric clutch slave cylinder,so gearbox out! so would'nt it be great if we had a Fiat engineer / mechanic which was able to cater to our needs, paid fairly and if him or her required a room for the night we would be responsible for this, crazy idea not sure.
I think there is enough members and problems here to keep him or her busy:devil:

So basically you guys want someone to work on your cars, and have liability insurance in case of a professional mistake, and work for little more than they get five days a week, when many of them can get more working overtime at time and a half. Dont wish to be rude but the only people that would be interested in this would be out of work techs, or youngsters with little experience.

I don't think that came across as being rude at all - I think it is a very valid point. Although Seboni121's idea is on the surface a very good one and a very attractive one to folk with repairs that need doing, the money really does have to be worth it, due to inconvenience, liability insurance, costs etc. TBH by the time you've factored all that in, you're probably as well off taking the car to the garage in the first place (I had a very similar problem doing GRP repair jobs on the side - just wasn't worth it in the end).

Seriously though - nice idea seboni121. It's just a bit flawed.

What about a forum section similar to myhammer or whatever its called, you post up what job you need done and your location and any forum user can put in a 'bid' for how much they will charge for doing the job, get e-bay style feedback in place so that you can rate people's skills (maybe even broken down by catagory ie. general maintenance, bodywork/kits, etc). People will then see who is good (and willing) at different tasks.
Like when people do 'homer's', no liability, just enough to cover costs of travel etc and a few beers :)

Liability is a fact of life, you cannot ignore it, I know a guy who was working on a car for a friend, and another mate turned up and offered to help, the mate fitted a battery and reverse conected it, bang went several ecus etc. The mate left before it was discovered and my friend had to take the flack, it cost him £1000 for a replacement car for the friend who suddenly saw her car not working at all.

Whilst being a good idea you would be a fool to leave yourself open to that risk. You need car insurance for driving on the road, however good a driver you are, same with business you have to have liability insurance.
