Of course failing finding any female friends to start your business... get some male friends and dress them up like this:

The front grille of my car is missing several horizontal braces that have been taken out by rocks and the like over the years. It will be next to impossible to repair well so should I try and find another one to repair/replace or should I just stick some mesh in there instead and have a custom grille?

Mesh? You better not be turning that Italian masterpiece into a rice rocket...
If you went with custom, it would be a one off job, and could cost a pretty penny. On the other hand, an oem or repro part could be hard to come across. Just not mesh, please...

I swear to god I am not making it a rice rocket. I'm only installing two extra speakers and that's as ricey as it's gunna get. Just that I'm having trouble finding any grilles at all. It doesn't need to be perfect I can probably do a decent repair if I can find one to cut a few horizontal slats out of.

why would a car be harder to start with clutch engaged (pedal pushed down), could it be caused a mixture of a poor starter motor, raised compression and lightened flywheel?

I'd say so! less rotating mass with declutch, so less flywheel energy which is already low to start with, and more energy needed to overcome the higher compression. Plus if theres a worn thrust bearing that could be sapping energy through friction (unlikely to be much though).
