Because if you hear it, rather than read it, you can be forgiven for thinking it was spelt how it sounds rather than spelt in a way no one (who isnt welsh) could ever figure out. In what world is I pronounced Y?
It's not. If you ask a Welsh speaker to say Iestyn clearly and slowly you should hear what I mean. :)
It amuses me that English speakers complain about the Welsh language. Welsh is phonetic - if you know how each letter sounds then you can pronounce any word when you see it written down.
English is not phonetic, and is generally considered harder to learn. It's only if you've grown up with it that you take it for granted.

nope, i still cant see how someone thats never came across the name before, can be expected to spell it properly.

My mistake for not being clear enough - I was specifically addressing this point:
In what world is I pronounced Y?
I appreciate that people may not be able to spell words they don't know in a language they don't understand! :p

IE is not quite pronounced Y in Welsh. There's a little hint of 'e' prior to it.

'I' on its own in Welsh is pronounced 'e' in English.

Try pronouncing Osian.

I don't think many foreigners would be able to spell a name like Sean too :p

and the name thing... "Ossyun"

Sorry, but....

:ROFLMAO:

:p

How do you pronounce Sian? :)

You've exemplified H's point really well too.

Sean/Shawn/Shaun are all pronounced exactly the same. Same for Lee/Leigh. It would be difficult for a foreigner to spell a name like that correctly ;)

that was my point!!! people where having a go cos superstarsummit didnt spell a name thats not even english right

I wasn't having a go - I was being educational ;)

My name ain't English either :p
