p.s. i just keep thinkin "what if that happened in my uno turbo, id be dead for sure!"

Hey Sammi,

Only just picked up this thread. How are you feeling now? The car looks a tip! You are very lucky. I was in a similar situation a few years back as a passenger with my Dad. Very traumatic and I didn't feel comfortable in a vehicle for a few weeks. Sad to see the Coop in such a mess.

Best regards

Just seen this.

Best wishes to you for a speedy recovery from all of us at Angel Tuning.

Its amazing how much stronger cars are these days, even for an older design (in more modern terms) such as the Coupe. I know a lot depends on the angle of the impact but fair play to it for you being able to crawl out. If I was your Dad (no comments about my age please) I would be thinking to myself, bloody hell, the strength and design of that car saved my girls life, maybe it wouldnt be such a bad idea for her to have another one.

All the best

Nige, Andy, Glenn, Paul & Support Team

PS We will go and check the wheelbearings of our Coupe this afternoon!

@Gaz - i am feeling a little better thanks, will start with all the practical things very soon, i cant do much myself ATM, but going to sort out someone to inspect the car.

I am still taking everything in, i was saying to H last night that the response i have got from people finding out is amazing.

@ nige thanks for your post - i have seen some states te coupes have been in when they have been totalled, there are lots of pics on the coupe site, and its amazing how these people got out of the cars in one piece, i never imagined i would be one of those people, but i am glad i was in the coupe, as it could have been worse if it was anything else

On a friendly note,

I would like to ask that people asking for parts, please drop H a P/M, Sammi is still recovering from the accident and probably has a lot on her mind right now.

When they are available, i'm sure she and H will let everyone know ASAP.

good advice, hopefully will get rid of the vultures :)

hey guys :)

Coupe arrived home(ish) today, being stored at my dads unit, it had to be forklifted off a trailer :(

My brother (sammibro) mark went to get the stereo out of it, he said if you think the pictures are bad, it doesnt compare to what the car is like in real like, he found it ver unnerving to look at it and also take the stereo out of it, and is amazed how i fit in the drivers side.

He said to give you an idea on how crushed the roof is, then it comes up to belly button hight

I am more adement i dont want to see the car, the mechanic from a neighbouring unit has no idea how i got out alive.

He had a look at the N/S rear and is under no doubt it was the cause of the accident not as a result. He thinks it is more likly to be the fitting that is at fault rather than the part itself.

I wont mention where i got the work done, but it was a coupe specialist and not a back street garage, so will wait and see for something more definate

At his point I'd just like to remind everyone that this is the mechanics OPINION of the LIKELY cause of the accident. We're not accusing anyone of anything (yet).

How the hell did Sammibro get in the car to get the stereo out? I couldn't open the passenger door, though to be honest, I didn't try too hard, as we hadn't decided what to do with the car at that point.

It's very scarey - we changed both sets of rear wheel bearings on my cinq a fortnight ago!!!

Think it's a good decision not to see the car, remember the good times, best not to dwell on what might have happened.

Good luck for the future Sammi! :)

Does the bearing have a cer clip?
The bearing doesn't have a circlip as far as i can see.
The bearing is part of the hub assembly (which is replaced as a whole).
The hub is held on to the stub axle with a single nut (which should be tightened to 280Nm).
Then there is a protective cap that goes over the nut.

Relevant pages of the workshop manual are:

Did the police not inspect the car, they normally want to check it when it is a serious accident. You could always ask an accident investigator to give it a check.

Hope you are feeling better Sammiboo

This is an example of one of the worst things that can happen to a driver, other drivers hitting you aside, mechanical failure with little or no notice is just scary.

Like many of todays cars, as H said the bearing is part of the hub and this is what most rear wheels are fixed to so if it comes adrift for any reason the wheel is going elsewhere. As previously stated in my other reply, I think the manufacturer of the bearing should be notified not accused as this could happen to other unsuspecting drivers.

A new nut must be fitted, it dont have a clip its squashed at the end to stop it coming off, if its undone it un squashes, you can re squash them but that dodgy, new hubs usally come with a new nut,
my deivers side nut was not tight, lucky i did mine today

The police have not inspected the car, though details of the incident were submitted to their accident department.
I have no doubt that it is going to be toroughly and independently investigated.

Heres a theory from one of the coupe guys who has spent some time looking at the pics and having a read up, from what i understand, he gave H a more detailed pm on his findings as a lot wouldnt have meant anything to me...

Hmmm... looked at the pics again, and they're... disturbing.

As you've said, the outer shell of the bearing has broken. I've had a look at the fiat part cd and the drawing isn't clear, but it *looks* as if there are conical bearings on both sides of the wheel carrier. Normally, they *can't* come out, and I can't see a way in which they can fail to allow the wheel to fall off - even if it's rattling around, it should still stay on.

I'm sorry, but I'm out of ideas. I think that the failure of that bearing was contributory, not an effect of the crash, but I couldn't swear to it.

So another person thinks the fault lies with the part, my brothers girlfriends dad worked in head office for the RAC and did some vehicle inspection from what i gather, he is looking at the car at weekend.

Just had one of our members call by my house a few minutes ago!!

Would like to say a big thank you to Taffgit for popping by with a card and a box packed with chocs and sweets :yum:

It was very kind of you and your work mates and i really am touched

Thank you
