Sorry to sound really dumb but this seems like the best place to ask...
if i want to replace the ConnectNav unit in my Stilo Abarth with a new 2DIN radio/sat nav (a pioneer one for example):
1. Would this just "work" plugandplay style, or will i need a code for it?
2. If i want to keep the cd changer will this need a code to pair up with the new unit?

Please feel free to tell me off if posted incorrectly.

If the replacement radio has a code, then you will need it, however many aftermarket radios have a detachable front panel for security rather than a code.

You will also need to modify the wiring to fit the new radio to the car, and carry out the Proxy Alignment procedure to delete the CN+ from the car's CAN. If you don't delete it, the mileage display will be constantly flashing, and you will not be able to adjust any of the vehicle settings that are currently done by the CN+.

2. If i want to keep the cd changer will this need a code to pair up with the new unit?

The Fiat version of the IDC-A09 CD changer has software the matches it to the standard Fiat Visteon radio or a CN+. It's unlikely to work with any other radio. The generic version of the IDC-A09 may work, but you would need the appropriate connector lead (if there is one) for the replacement radio.

Wow. That sounds rather complicated! I'll have to look up this "proxy alignment" procedure.

And whats the "CAN"?

Control Area Network.

It connects all the ECUs (known as NODEs) in the car, including the CN+, to the body computer so they can exchange information with each other over the network.

The CN+, for example, gets a speed signal from the ABS NODE, a crash signal from the airbag NODE, steering wheel button signals from the steering wheel button NODE, sends vehicle settings information to the body computer NODE etc.

Once the Proxy Alignment is done, all the vehicle settings will be available on the MODE button menu at the right end of the dashboard. Without the PA you won't even be able to adjust the time clock once the CN+ is removed.

You can do the PA yourself with Multiecuscan, an interface and the appropriate connector cables. If you add your location to your profile, someone close to you with Multiecuscan may offer to help.
