Fiat Bravo & Smart Fortwo Car Crash - YouTube

Discuss.

Ive looked closer and in my opinion the driver is looking into the passenger foot well and at the last moment before impact looks up at the back of MEPs car see image. After impact the driver throws her black sunglasses into the floor area

Doesnt your camera save a larger seperate file for the rear view?

I can't figure out why you stopped?
There is an ambulance overtaking cars coming in MEPs direction and on MEPs side of the road, with lights flashing.

Can't tell for sure...but was she looking down at something?

going in the back of someone is always your fault really... Even if an idiot stamps on the brakes in front of you for no reason you should be alert enough and far back enough to stop.. once your stood in court try arguing against that, trust me i have been there, you can't argue against it at all. Only really going to get out of it if its dense fog or something like that..

if you look at the video @12 seconds the Smart is almost in the back of MEPs car but the Ambulance is only just crossing the white line, MEP at this point has completely stopped

Whats done is done she's still 100% at fault, just hope you're ok MEP and the car isn't too badly damaged

Nothing in the above video was wrong, well except for the woman who rear ended MEP. Obviously MEP is totally in the right because she should have been paying attention and been ready for MEP to slam on his breaks at any point.
My point I'm making is for future reference, my Dad was a paramedic for 28 years, he told me when I was learning to drive that when an ambulance is coming rather than coming to a halt slow to a complete crawl, he said it often makes their job of getting past you much easier.

In that situation stopping was probably the right thing to do, seeing where the ambulance was just as you'd stopped, it would of been that or slow down to a crawl and judging by how long it took her to react chances are she would of rear ended you either way

I'd estimate that the ambulance was getting on for 150m away at the time MEP stopped.... I think f it were me, I would have adjusted my speed to one I could have stopped from if I had needed to rather than stop.... She still might have rear-ended MEP, but the speed of the impact might have been reduced....

Oh yes and hope you and the car are ok MEP.... I forgot to say that in my first post!

There is an ambulance coming in the opposite direction - but he is not on MEP's side of the road, simply overtaking cars where he deems it is safe to do so. By stopping, MEP was actually delaying the ambulance's chances of overtaking, by continuing the journey, they would have passed each other within a second or so.

Or even better than that, if she had actually been paying attention MEP could of done anything and there wouldn't have been a collision at all

I suspect she saw brake lights and assumed MEP was slowing for the roundabout ahead rather than stopping, but by the time she realised it was too late.... Bizarre really as she was a pretty safe distance beforehand. :nutter:

there is no round about.... well there is but its 5 miles away so slowing down really early,

The road is an 8 mile straight stretch with a bend at about the half way point generally where MEP stopped you would never expect a car to stop.

another problem with this road is its long an boring so people switch off, stop paying attention very few turn off as its mostly ditches and fields both sides, will all of helped contribute to the accident.

looking on the map and the locations of the road signs the ambulance was around 70-80 metres away (distance between closest 40 sign and distant green sign) the ambulance would be doing more than 40mph (no one does 40 on this stretch) but probably less than 60mph (maybe 50mphish maybe more, stopping distance for a normal car is 53metres this is a big ambulance) Had MEP slowed down rather than stopping and the ambulance pulled out then chances are MEP would have been squashed between a 50+mph 4 ton ambulance and then still hit by the smart car

in avoiding any emergency vehicle either create a path (pull off the road) or keep going and it will find a way through, better hold it up for a couple of seconds than any one else getting injured

she wasn't 100% on the ball, i thought MEP was been funny cause she was speeding till i saw the ambulance lol

But tbh - i'd of stopped as well, but thats looking at the video
In real life i might not have stopped so quickly, but she'd of still run into the back

Hope tow ball savior - but i'd cry if a bimbo smashed into mine as well

Pretty certain I didn't say to use 'kerbs or grass', however the video in your link is pretty good in explaining it all especially people thinking they are helping by jumping a red light, then get into trouble them self especially where red light cameras are fitted

Some interesting views. Just my response as all I done was posted the video and not much else, so no background.

Before slowing I had cruise control set to 50-55mph (60 limit). I saw the ambulance as it came around the bend ahead (as Andy has said the only one in the 8-9mile stretch) and was looking carefully at what the cars on the other side of the road coming towards me were doing.

The some of the vehicles in front of the ambulance were slowing, and there was a good clear space in front of me for the ambulance to use to overtake, so I checked my mirror, smart was a safe distance away, I indicated left and pulled over and slowed at what I'd consider a reasonable rate of deceleration.

Ambulance could then see I'd pulled over and stopped and that it was safe to over take the cars in front of me. This is the mothod I usually use along this stretch of road where this incident occurs normally weekly (I use the road twice a day).

Lots of what if's, yes I could have crawled along, I could have ignored the fact an ambulance was coming and continued as normal, but I know that for that situation what I done was best.

The road has a fatality almost on a monthly basis and even the best of drivers cannot easily judge distances on it normally due to the lack of road furniture etc, so what I done I feel made the ambulance drivers job easier. I'm fully away of how stopping can sometimes hinder ambulances which is why I've at times accelerated out of their way (another vid of that on my channel somewhere).

Ultimately the girl in the Smart was at fault, I've no hard feelings against her, we all make mistakes, and I know how easy it is to 'switch off' on this particular road. I'm just glad in the whole scheme of things that it was a minor accident - even though it's annoyed and will no doubt inconvenience me. Her insurance co have already admitted liability btw.

Fair play to you MEP.... Like you say, it was ultimately her fault.... I could have sworn I saw a roundabout sign! I think it's because it looks very much like a stretch of road I travel to work on, and it's got a roundabout where that bend is!

One thing I did notice.... Her airbag didn't deploy.... I assume SMART cars have to have them so was the actual impact not severe enough?

You didn't, but that's generally what off the road means, apologies for reading too far into it then. :p

I find that video perfect.

i would have thought so - they have a pharaday cage effect, so surly airbags as well when the cage don't stop the energy as well

Probably activated her Seat tension puff pastry - making her sit?

The fact tho MEP - as long as what you say did happen
You indicated and slowed to a stop - means you did 100% the right thing, that the driver behind should have seen and noticed such acts, and reacted accordingly

Just a question - saw it was traffic you had stopped for - as it stopped suddenly - who here would flash the hazard lights?
