Temp Guage Query

Hi Everyone,

I have a 97 HGT and want to know how far up the needle on the temp guage should move and how quickly from start up this should take?

Roughly on all my previous fiats it was between 1/2 - 3/4 of the way up.

most of mine hit half way then the fan kicks in, normally takes about 10 mins of driving

Mine is always bang on halfway and the only time it didn't was when the thermostat was on it's way out. Changed and she sits exactly at halfway again. Also, full warmup is a lot quicker now getting to halfway in 3 mins or less.

blooomin hell, must be a diesel thing, mine take 5-10mins to go up.....

Darren - normal for diesel. Mine takes also around 10 mins to warm up, but it depends on how you drive it when the engine is cold.

Normal conditions should be half way, under load one line, max one and a half above the half mark. During the period cca. half way between half line and one over it the fans should kick in.

If its higher that above, you may have a problem with the dial, temp sensor or thermostat.

Looks like the thermostat may be out cos it's not moving much.

Did about 8 miles last night (all my roads are empty 60 mph country roads) and it only moved up 2 notches.

Are thermostats expensive?

I know they are an easy fix but is it easily accessible?

If the temp goes so little up - thermostat is the problem for sure. But to be on the right side, does the temperature rise a bit when you let the car idle for longer time ?

The thermostat is easy to change, just find the cooling system bleeding procedure here on the forum (use the search), but are a bit pricey.
Reason - the thermostat is in one piece.
