Hi all
my temp gauge on my hgt 147 s reg 58000 miles is running two marks from the bottom the normal is in the middle of cold to half way .
But park up leave it running it will go up to just over half way and the fan will run

Is any one elses car doing the same or is a shot thermostat
the cabin heater is warm as winter is coming i do not wish to frezze as the heater normaley very good
thank for any info trev

I've had this discussion many of time about temperature guages fluctuating. I've owned 5 Fiat's now, and all but the one I currently drive did the exact same thing as yours, and each car was okay! However my new Fiat Bravo temperature guage sits at halfway all the time, without a blip.

I've come to the conclusion that both are right.

Your temperature guage is reading correctly, and there is nothing wrong with your stat.

However Tom may disagree.

Re: Re: temp gauge

It should sit halfway, not move about that much.

Re: Re: Re: temp gauge

Now this is something i just dont understand! Mine does and has never sat half way on my 1.6 - it sits a couple of notchs below and I have never suffered any of the symptoms described in previous posts!

My cabin heats up sufficently, infact the heater is fantastic, my fuel economy is average among the 1.6 range - i get about 300 + miles to £30.

My car has no other known faults.

If the stat should sit halfway and mine does not - what harm is it doing??

Re: Re: Re: Re: temp gauge

Its if it sits only 1/4 the way up or even less when you are driving.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: temp gauge

Yeah...

D'ya think it's different on mine beacuse it's a diesel?

Ya see.. If it's a REALLY cold morning and I'm doing 56mph on the motorway (that's 2,000rpm in 5th) - just before the turbo kicks in - I can get the temperature down to the second notch from the bottom! (on the mk1 dials)

Maybe that would explain a lot..

Diesel setup? :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: temp gauge

Tom, i know you have probably said this before, but,.....what problems will having the temp guage at the 2nd mark be happening to the engine? and also, what is the likely cause? thanks very much

alasdair.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: temp gauge

Bad MPG and it will be caused by a worn thermostat.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: temp gauge

whoah! you mean my poor mpg isnt caused by the throttle being glued to the floor? sounds like a plan! how much is a new thermostat approximately and how easy is it to fit? cheers,
alasdair.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: temp gauge

Depends on the engine. 1.6/1.8 are about £50 and about 1hr, 1.4 is cheaper, 1.2/HGT dunno.

The prob is getting the air out of the system afterwards. It just takes a bit of care and remembering to turn the heater on first.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: temp gauge

ok, thanks...its a 1.8 so 50 quid it is! ile get that sorted....and the clutch...and the gearbox.....and then sell it!

alasdair.

ps.....for an hgt
