Temp gauge question

I have been looking at buying a 98 Bravo HGT, but on the test drive I noticed the temp gauge was only reading about a third of the way up the gauge. The seller assures me that this is normal on the HGT - can anyone tell me if this is right?

IIRC, they should generally read a nats whatsit under half...

At most 1 notch under halfway, ideally on half way. Given that its getting warmer outside anything less than this means the thermostat is deffo worn out.
