I've just bought a 1996 1.9 tdi, 27000 miles on the clock.
I don't know how acurate the temp gauge is but it never gets above 70, which takes 10 mins , but idleing in this weather it drops down to 50 or so, is this normal or a faulty thermostat.

Unless you've a faulty gauge or sensor, that sounds rather low. Check if a thermostat is fitted. I'm amazed at the low mileage for a 1996 model, what was it doing before you got it or is it a motorcaravan?

Checked thermostat this morning, and there it wasn't.
Visited Halfords ,not in stock but could order one for £95, left Halfords.
Anywhere online selling item or should I go to motor factors?

Hi,
these are prone to overheating, before you put it back take out the radiator and flush, or if it's the original just replace it while you have the chance. Check the thermo switches for the fans, again better to replace now. I have the same van, as a motorhome, I've been down the same route. (And the thermostat does costs an arm and a leg).
Do a search on some of the motorhome forums, they are full of advice.
