Ok so im going to change my tappets on my 1.8 16v HGT punto over the weekend, (hopefully)
Can someone shed some light on what i need to do ? I have a fair idea, more to what tools i will need.

Would a socket set be enough to sort this or would i need anything else ?

Thanks in advance (y)

Just a Socket Set? I dont think so

My Personal Choice
Take Head off
Google Local Engine Rebuild company
Go to Sed Company
Pay to Have the whole Head to be redone

As todo the tappets - im sure you have to have the everything off - well its 50% there for a reconditioning!

I do know the Cambelt has to come off
the Rocker covers - the Cam's themselves - the oil line that runs over the top too etc etc

I do think you might be better getting a Company todo it - or a Local mechanic who should be able todo it as well

ive got a few mates who are mechanics who said they will help....
Do you think i should send the head off or you think it be ok to put back on after ive finished ?

How long is a piece of string?

Your Risk if it goes wrong and smash's engine up
If a Company Does it wrong - its there problem!

Your call - your choice - im Not making it for you

your making more concerned that i was originally haha.. i was hoping this would be a simple swap over haha...
I cant really take it to a garage it has no insurance, things have to be done on my path :(
Not getting the insurance either till its all fixed... £5000 is a lot of money for insurance for a car that needs things doing to it :bang:

Changing tappets on the majority, if not all Fiat's, involves removing the camshaft(s).

Cambelt timing on the HGT means needing the special camshaft locking tools (paintmarks are no good).

Also, is it definately tappets that are the cause? The variators often start to rattle as they wear over time.

Its got a slight miss fire, and when i did a compression test cyclinder 2 was down slightly.
The fella that did the test said the HG is ok, it could be the tappets that are faulty, because the person who had the car before me had been running it wit barely any oil inside it.

How can a rattly tappet issue affect the sealing of the rings in the bores and valves against their seats?

tappets just make the car sound tappy, they arnt actually called tappets on a punto there bucket and shims.

the cambelt is going to have to come off to do this job i suggest sending it to a professional or getting a mobile mechanic to do it for you because if you get the timing wrong thats the atleast 8 valves going to be bent and a cracked cylinder head.

Ive got a mate coming over tomorrow to help out.
Yer they not tappets like you said, they do look like buckets

The fella who did the compression said that the valves might not be opening fully which is causing it to miss fire slightly...

I first thought it was the HG because tiny bit of water coming out of the exhaust.
Although the car hasnt been ran in the past 2 weeks, so i think its condensation or what ever in the exhaust..

If i gotta spend money to sort it i will :)
Its not on the road atm so i got plenty of time to get this sorted :)

Because your Not Planning very Well
Sounds like your going in to this abit too blind

Take a Step Back - Look at Video's and Tut's and see what you wanna do :)

ill do what i can tomorrow, ill change the tappets as planned, but leave the head off and buy one on tuesday and slowly put everything back on :)
Would the cam belt / water pump be worth changing ?

Well Since the Head has to come off
it seems really Really STUPID! To Not replace the HG while your there?

Ziggy
To replace the tappets the head does not have to come off. It may be cheaper however to replace the whole head with tappets with another one known to be good in which case the HG should be replaced as well.

But before you do anything you need to determine the extend of the tappet noise issue. Is it noisy only at start of the engine until the engine gets warm. Is it noisy all the time hot or cold. Is the tappet noise there at all revs when hot?

Its not really because there noisy.
Ive just recently bought the car and there is a slighty miss fire,
i checked the engine oil and it wasnt even showing on the dipstick there was any oil in there.
So after i put about 1 and a half litres the miss fire became a little better.
I then did a compression test because i thought the gasket could have gone, but it should that cylinder 2 was down slightly, so the fella who did the test suggest it be the hydrolic tappets which may have broke due to no engine oil

Well if the tappets aren't noisy then they are OK and the cause of misfire is something else. I would first identify why that oil is getting lost.
