WD40 is only a 'penetrating oil' in that it gets in everywhere and makes a mess, but without doing much good.

i use it mostly for cleaning up rusty old bits. its great at melting surface rust

Use it for cleaning machine tools at work, at home for cleaning tools, as a light cutting oil and, most usefully, cleaning and getting water out of electrical stuff.

For getting things unstuck, I've had success with 'cryo' (freeze spray) freeing oils. Great for exhaust studs.
