Technical Stuck in gear

Hi all. I bought a project Cinquecento S. Owner told me it had clutch issues. Got it trailered home and the clutch pedal feels fine, but it wouldn't select any gear, felt very stiff. I finally got it into a gear (bad idea as it turned out) and now it won't come out of the gear - oops! Any thoughts? I've attached a photo of the gear linkage that's under the gearstick in the cabin, should it look like that?

Is that a muddy rusty looking liquid down there?

It is indeed, and I have no idea what it is, or how it got in there. Looks to be a slightly thicker consistency than water

I never looked down there on mine, but I'm sure it shouldn't look like that.

I wonder if it was caught in a flood or if someone was a bit eager with a jet wash!

Unfortunately that all attaches from under the car.

It's funny, I've just had a look at under the gear lever in my Seicento, and it's bone dry, no mayo/rust/water thanks for the screenshots.
