Hi, I have been gettint a stop/start unavailable warning on my dashboard for months. I just checked my engine recently and found a cable connect to one of the battery terminals was snapped. What is the purpose of this wire and what is the name of the part?

Cheers

Have you had any work on the car in the last year that may have involved removing the battery?

Battery monitor is the part the wires go to.

I'm concerned about the lack of slack and no outer insulation black plastic ribbed cover, the cable is damaged in several areas indicating its been pinched more than once, and the whole area could do with a clean, it's possible to repair if you know how to but may require a new section of wire

Hi John,

Thanks for the response.

Not that I know off, but could have happened when my alternator seizing was fixed?

I'm just a customer, and get my local garage to sort me out. Can the wire be bought on its own, or is it a part of a set and is it available on ebay? Would you mind telling me how much I'm looking at to fix this issue?

Cheers

Just read this, if it still does not work when fixed, check the fuses, mine was not in the book, but there is one inside, from memory its a 5A, and its at the bottom, fuse 9? Caused me several weeks annoyance until I found it on an Alfa diagram, I have a post about it on here.

Please see attached for the connector required to connect to the stop start sensor. Mt wire broke off at the connector so I got a new one. They can be disassembled (remove purple clip and prise out terminal with small screwdriver) but I wanted to lengthen the connecting wires as there wasn't a lot of slack so I did a search and there they were at RS components.

has it solved your problem?

Yes. The wiring harness now has a reasonable amount of slack so the cable can be routed out of harms way. I can now remove the -ve connection to the battery complete with Stop/Start sensor without having to unplug anything.. It seems worth doing as there wasn't a lot of slack in the original harness and I wasn't that surprised when one of the wires broke. As I said, the original connection could have been remade as the terminals can be removed from the plug without damage if you do it correctly. Hoverer I have replaced the rear subframe, rear shocks, rear brake lines/hoses/ drums/backing plate and am now moving on to the front subframe , shocks, shock mounts, brake hoses, callipers and fitting the grill for the spotlight version along with spotlights so why skimp on this? The car was my partners first car so we are keeping it in spite of the fact it is an 11 reg and needs tlc.

One thing I should add, the terminals specified by RS themselves do fit but I am convinced the are not the correct item, I got them to work as they are the correct size but it took a bit of levering to get them home. I have asked RS to look into their recommendation regarding the terminals and am waiting for them to get back to me. If they give me an updated stock number for the correct item I will update the post.

I have received terminal advice from RS, Please see attached. I went with
this option as it is rated at 10amps, the rest being rated higher. I do not know what the current in this circuit is but I would be surprised if it was over 10amps as it goes to the ECU and it has thin gauge wiring. Selecting one of the other options would be totally suitable from the current point of view but it may well be designed for use with thicker wires and not grip properly when crimped. On the subject of crimping none of mine were suitable so I crimped with needle nosed pliers. I am happy to that as I am a retired Electrical and Electronic Engineer.

I see quite a few of these with this exact same issue, I have absolutely no idea why on some the loom has been positioned in such a way that it is too tight, I can only assume it has something to do with the conversion to Right Hand Drive.

I regularly go to garages and forecourts and repair this fault, sometimes there is enough slack left in the cable, but normally I cut them back and extend, I use the original connector housing and fit new contacts.

I have also seen quite a few where the wire has snapped further up the harness, which adds the extra bit of fun to my day.
