General Stilo - the Positive Stuff

General Stilo - the Positive Stuff

Been a while since I've been on here, but just doing a bit of research ahead of getting my cambelt changed, and was warmed by this thread.

I bet I'm the nuttiest Stilo fan out there. After they first came out, seeing them on the road was always a special moment. Like with the Bravo/Brava, you knew the Italians had arrived in the Focus class. And there was something about the proportions of the *five door* from the front three-quarters which I just loved. Better than the three door for me (too wide and low) - though I'm fully prepared to be in the minority on that one! Anyway, test drove an 02 Abarth 5-door in Sassi Grey (fab colour) which I loved apart from the Selespeed (I now think it was just a case of getting used to it)... When I learnt later that post-04 they did a *manual* 5-door 2.4 then that was it. About four years ago now I got myself a pre-registered (reportedly ex-demo) Prestigio with 100 miles on the clock for 6 grand under list. With two-tone leather, Sky Window, 17 inch blade alloys and in Vitality Blue.

For me the Prestigio is such a complete motor - I'm a family man, so need practicality (it's basically like a 5-seat MPV), yet it also has toys (great stereo), leather, comfort, a superbly charismatic motor, decent pace and, when you get used to the roll (!), surprisingly good handling (although it rolls, you have a job unsticking it). Sure, fast point-to-point driving needs concentration, but if "good" cars are ones you can drive without any effort, then where's the fun in that? I also love the relative rarity of Stilos - seeing another is an occasion. (I reckon the Prestigio, specifically, is one of the rarest modern Italian cars there is! I reckon there are 30 in the country, tops).

I'm looking forward to Spring because a great Stilo experience is burbling around with the excellent Skywindow open (mine is actually quieter (near silent) on the motorway with it open than when it is closed....!)

Oh, and despite the 233 g/km CO2 output (which I just don't believe is that high given how other similarly-powered and mpg-rated cars are classed), I've averaged 29 mpg over all kinds of driving. Which I don't think is too bad at all. Not that I'm a fuel miser or anything.

So, a few words in support of the 5 door. Like a lot of supposedly challenging-looking Fiat group cars (I used to run Lancia Dedras...!), I think it's getting (even) better with age. Put it next to a Mk 6 Golf now and the Stilo looks positively petite and sophisticated. And although I toyed with a new Bravo, the looks of that are just too contrived as "Italian" (which seems to mean curves for the sake of it). I like the Stilo's honest, handsome, square-rigged look.

Problems? I needed a new washer bottle under warranty (?!). And when I had the front tyres replaced (at 18k - gulp!) I discovered the tracking was out. I currently think my radiator cap may be on the way out (it's an odd design, isn' it, with that funny catch?), but that's been it (touch wood, fingers crossed...)

Thanks for the thread, and happy Stilo-ing!

tis gonna be a car i remember forever and ever :)

the corsa and micra were just a to b cars...

but the stilo had somthing more about it... great styling, comfy (ish - except the hard clutch and stiff gearbox).... quite nippy, economical and cheap to run tax/ins wise

the odd bit went wrong with it.... body computer/split airhose/dodgy horn/broken rubber gear linkage etc etc (body comp replaced under warranty... gear linkage under warranty.. and the other two cost me about £100 in total to fix... went through a set of tires in about 12k which wasnt to bothered in tbh as i loved the car

the skyroof... gave me great looks when in town or going down the motorway :)

passed its first mot with flying colours.... 2nd year with advisorys for a new drop link and the exhaust bracket... as well as the air hose needed doing which had split again

a month after that i got my bravo which is a car equally as good but in different aspects (more comfy, roomier, faster, actually cheaper to run, so far more reliable - but it misses out on the sportier looks and i miss my skyroof :()

i had some proud moments with my stiloo, as i do with my bravo :D

the brooklands test hill (3 weeks before i got the bravo and just before the redness :p)

The 3 door looks great, the 5 door looks awful

I'd beg to differ on that one...

The only major thing I don't like is that I get cramp on long journeys

But I totally agree on that! I get bad cramp and knee pain in my right leg on long journeys and I have to say, I also think it's the pedal height. So wish it hinged at the bottom rather than the top...

Never really had much go wrong with mine at all, until last Sunday.

Complete variator failure, all the internals disintegrated, completely stipped gearing etc - followed by inlet cam jumping a tooth. You could literally turn the inlet cam with your hand very easily. So new variator, labour, cambelt kit and all the other bits and bats and a minor service. £494!! Luckily I was 50metres away from my local garage.

Still, nothing puts a smile on my face like that 5 pot engine does!:D

Best car I ever had and I've had a lot. Complete reliability over 32,000 miles and 3 years 3 months since new. Wonderful engine (1.4 16V) that is happy in every gear, cruises at a comfortable 80MPH (abroad!). Terrific gearbox/gearchange. Nice driving position (apart from slightly awkward accelerator pedal position), bags of room inside, big enough boot for camping gear. I could go on.

today i found out what kind of car this stilo is a fantastic car really quiet inside fantastic spec and above all comfortable smooth on the road not as good as my skoda superb but that cost me 10 times more so as a second car just to and from work its a bargain
:worship::worship:(y):eek::D

Had my 02 JTD since Sept 03 - 14 months old and 13k on the clock, at a bargain price of 6K from an estate sale with all the bells and whistles. Still going strong with 105K on the clock, original exhaust is getting flaky on the back box, but still solid. Front discs changed at 65K and rears at 90K. 2 turbo boost solenoid valves replaced, front springs replaced - 1 broke on a (big) speed bump and it feels like the rear shocks are due replacement.
There arent many cars around which are so cheap to buy (2nd hand) and run (average 45mpg) and provide such a versatile means of transport.
If I had to replace it, it would probably be with the multiwaggon, just for that extra bit of load space - although I guess I'd miss the Skyroof! Some of the kiddies friends insisted on having it open yesterday, despite the cold and threat of snow!!
