Hi all.
I'm looking to buy a Stilo 5 door & was wondering how good or how bad the 1.2 engine is.
Till recently I had a 1.2 80sx Brava which I found ok for most use, but it was a bit underpowered on a recent break in Wales.
Is the Stilo engine the same as the Brava? or have Fiat improved it?
Most cars for sale in my region of the country (& in my price range) seem to be 1.2's but I'm a bit dubious about buying one.
Thanks Dave G.

it's a great engine... but not for such a large car. and the stilo should actually be heavier than your brava. my advice? don't do it, even fiat only sold stilo's with the 1.2 for only 1 oe 2 years.

I've had a dig around the internet & yes the Stilo is heavier then the Brava.
If it is exactly the same same engine I think I'll hang on for a 1.6, or 1.8.
Ok thanks for the help lads.

From 2004> the 1.2 16v was replaced with a 1.4 16v.

The 1.9 jtd is great value for money, great tuning possiblities, and low insurance at group 5 i believe - highly recommended (y)

Nowt wrong with 1.2 in the 3-door, can't comment in the 5-door.

1.2 isn't underpowered for its capacity really, its not that bad, plus you can get a handy re-map from angel tuning.

If your gonna cover 100,000 miles in the car get a JTD, if you don't mind about performance and want reasonable economy you can't fault the 1.2. :)

I had a Brava 1.2 and now have a Stilo 1.2. The engine is basically the same, but it definately feels much more powerful in the stilo than the brava. (it has probably been mapped slightly differently) It is also important to remember that the 1.2 Stilo comes with a 6 speed gearbox, therefore you have the ability to obtain power quickly when you need it in 3rd and fourth gears. Indeed, on motorways if you need to change down at all to overtake, it is only down to 5th. I can honestly say the only engine I would swap for my 1.2 is the JTD, as the economy from the 1.2 is phenomenal for a petrol (I drive 40 motorway miles a day at 80mph+ and average 46.3 MPG, if I drive sensibly I can get it to over 50MPG, almost diesel territory!)

I wouldn't worry about a 1.2; 80bhp and 6-speed box is a good combo. Personally, I think the 1.6 is languid, but that's personal preference for you.

I,m pretty well decided now on buying the Stilo on the link below.
I'm getting it for £3950 which is what the reserve price was.
The manager of the dealer who is selling it reckons it is unmarked. He said they normally deliver cars all over the country & if they turned up at someones door with something less then perfect that the buyer would refuse to accept it. He sounded sincere. :)
I'll check it out on Tuesday & if ok buy it there & then. Does it look good value??

That looks to be a fair deal really. The car looks nice and tidy from the pictures and with only 28,000 miles it is very low mileage for the year. Just goes to show how much car you can get for your money with the Stilo really.

I've bought Fiats since the Strada days & apart from liking them they are usually very good value for what you get.
The guy selling that car on the link said "if he had to be picky there are a couple of marks on one of the wheeltrims".
He'd have to be a complete t**T to describe a car like that then it turns out to be a right dog when I turn up to veiw it.

Yeah, sounds as though you will get a great little motor for a reasonable price. You'll probably want to put alloys on it anway! (the 16" ones are quite tasteful and discreet, also lots of cheap sets available on the forum as everyone seems to upgrade to 17" wheels) You'll have to keep us all informed how it turns out.

Dynamique is if course Renault, Dynamic he means I think.

I thought the Dynamic had alloys as per the advert, the pic is def wheel trims :(

We get into the old 'Fiat p!ssing about with the spec all the time' problem here'. The early Dynamic 5 door models had plastic wheel trims (with the 3dr getting alloys to suit the 'athlectic' overtones'). This lasted for about 12 months or-so, then the 5dr got alloys ;)
