Technical steering stiff

hello guys i have a 2003 fiat punto multijet my sterring wheel been very stiff today and my steering wheel light on my dashboard is on too can anyone tell me what the problem is please and how can i get it fixed? thanks

2003 surely is Mk2 with electric PAS?

Check battery and alternator condition (fully charged battery should give 12.6 volts), then check with engine running, and finally engine running with lights on. Cheap multimeter set to 20v DC across the battery terminals.

Report back.

It's obviously a power steering issue, but they're often triggered by simple electrical faults.

This happened on my multijet this week
now these cars dont like running low speed in 5th gear they judder and try to rip the chain off the engine,its caught me out a few times.
Anyway this is what happened to mine,i was pulling in to the kerb on a busy road and didnt dip the clutch quickly enough.
The engine went jerky jerky then i dipped the clutch and freewheeledto a stop and turned engine off
On return to car i couldn't get power steering to work.
Got it back to work ,code read it and it came up vehicle speed sensor fault.
Cleared code car been fine since.
