Steering makes a noise...

OK how the hell do i describe this noise in words?!...

When i turn the steering wheel a half turn or more, ie. when parking or turning a tight corner, i can hear a noise coming from the steering column as i turn the wheel. The noise is continous but much lower pitch than a squeeking noise, more of a 'sighing' noise. If this has happened to anyone else they may know what i mean. I really hope this aint anything expensive, but with me it normally is.

Any ideas?

check the oil level.
does any belt make a noise

Check you power steering fluid level.

If it low top it up but keep an eye on it. May be leaking fluid from somewhere.
