Technical Start/Stop problem on a 1.4 8v

Hi, I have a gp 1.4 8v since january 2011 (over a year now) and recently I started having some start stop issues... at first the engine stopped as it should and waited for me to press the clutch then it stopped for about 15 secs and turned itself on now it wont even stop at all!!!! and there is no check engine light nor (start/stop off on the screen)

I installed fog lamps (as the guide says) and a 150w x2 channel amp + a pioneer hu.... but i have had these in my car for some months now... though a couple of weeks ago i installed another amp (sony xm zr602 ...350watts max). I suspect that my problem has something to do with the new amp... Im not shure though

I had a punto evo with start stop as a courtesy car from a fiat dealer and it would only cut the engine for about 10s then it would fire up again for no reason so it seems to be a common problem.

You may have better luck posting in the punto evo section because here in the uk start stop was introduced when the car was facelifted and re-named punto evo. No UK Grande punto ever had start stop.

Today my grande punto didnt start at all!!!! the battery was dead! (I left the two amps disconected last night)

I had to do a rolling start :yuck:

ps. can someone move this thread to the punto evo section? (u guys in the uk dont have the grande punto with S/S and i need help with this please)

Just a quick comment about the Stop/Start system on the Evo. I have the 1.6 Multijet Sporting and there are various things that influence the Stop/Start.
1. It won't work for around 5 mins if the car has just been started.
2. If you have the aircon or rear heated windscreen switched on it won't work either.
3. The engine will start itself if stationary for a lengthy period (>5 mins)
It's all to do with the battery voltage, if this drops below a predetermined level the engine will start to charge the battery. If you have installed a lot of after-market equipment this is likely to drain the battery. If the Start/Stop still isn't working try disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery (quick release plug) and re-connect after a couple of minutes, this should reset the system. Hope this helps...

Although re #3 above, I have paperwork from Fiat that says if it has stopped for more than 3 minutes it needs the key to restart it rather than being automatic???

Have been at roadworks and caught up in hold-ups where the car will start itself after a period of time (seems like around the 3-5 minutes mark), again is related to the electrical load on the battery at the time (lights, wipers etc). I have only experienced having to start again with the key if I open the door, the car must sense this!! Will put it to the test...

Ofcourse it detects that the door is open, You don't want start stop to work if you jump out for a while and you somehow forget that you haven't turned of the ignition.

I found that my start&stop didn't work until I hit 1000 miles. It has a mind of it's own though and doesn't always stick to the "no stop" conditions! (I.e. it will sometimes stop when the engine is cold, or the air con is running)

I think it's just a gimmick that gets in the way.

Battery voltage is low and the car restarted itself as a result, otherwise it might not have sufficient voltage to restart later.

If the Start/Stop still isn't working try disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery (quick release plug) and re-connect after a couple of minutes, this should reset the system. Hope this helps...

Shouldn't do that Stew, the IBS needs to recalibrate after disconnection, between 4 to 12 hours.

Ok, so i figured out and realized that my s/s system is ok. The system turned the engine on because of low battery voltage, and later my batery voltage was so low that the s/s woudn't even stop the engine. The reason for my battery having low voltage (today in the morning it was drained) is because there is something draining it.

With a test light i founded that there something conected to a 70 amp fuse in the engine compartment fuse box that is draining my battery with the engine stopped. I'm going to start another thread on this... I NEED TO FIX THIS!!! I HAVE BEEN PUSHING MY LITTLE GP ALL DAY TO MAKE IT START! (i'm gonna end developing muscles :yum: )

70 amp fuse!? That can't be right surely!? The only thing that would need quite that much current would be the starter motor or maybe a massive industrial hydraulic pump.

70 amp? Wow.

hmmmm... no, no smell. Even though I checked back there too

About the fuse.. I opened the fuse box in the engine and took it out to see from which circuit was the big fuse from, I discovered that it went straight into the dash (a big red cable) and connected into the fuse box in the dash. It supplies that fuse box with power...

When I disconnected the red cable from the dash fuse box the test light went off (and now i bought a multimeter to read the amps through mi battery).. The next thing to do was to pull out all the fuses and see with which one the light and ammeter went down... the thing is that I pulled them all and the light was still light and the ammeter showed a current flow of 0.25 amps! (it should be at the most 0.05 amps=50miliamps). My next move was to disconnect all the plugs and remove do fuse box.

When I did this the light came off and the ammeter went down to almost 0amps (obviously). But when I started cnonecting each plug it didn't matter which one I connected the light came on again and the ammeter read 0.11amps (at the minimum). So I think that I have to replace the fuse box... may be something burned inside and its making a short.

btw... look at the other thread I made please, look at the photos and tell me if the fuse boxes are the same as in a punto evo 1.4 8v... just to know if the fuse box I have can be replaced with an evo one or a gp one
