A standard alone ecu is an aftermarket ecu e.g. Motec, Haltech, Autronic etc.

An aftermarket ecu will completely replace the orignal ecu. Usually, they need to be custom wired into the car, although some plug and play units exist for common cars. Once they are installed they can be tuned via a laptop etc.

These ecu's are relatively expensive and then you need to install it and have it tuned too so the overall process is far more expensive than a simple re-map. usually the OE ecu is better for the job, unless you buy a very expensive aftermarket ecu. Aftermarket ECU are better suited to race cars or engine conversions when the OE ecu cannot be adapted or tuned.

iv read you can add a supercharger to a hgt but wont get the power unless you re-map ecu, so would a standalone ecu produce this extra bhp

Yes, the fuelling and ignition advance can only be changed so much on a stock ECU anyway. Regardless, the hiatchi can't be mapped. A decent standalone gives you much more scope for mapping.

On an HGT cost wise ~£1000 for emerald, ~£1200 for DTA that's inclusive of a few hours mapping.
