can anyone help or have any ideals on the following. When i start the cat and drive off it fine, after about 20 minutes of driving i get a high pitched squealing/squeaking noise when ever i turn the wheel to the left. Even if i turn slightly like half a centimeter to the left it starts. if i go back to the center it stops. I've also noticed that when i apply the brakes it stops, if i apply the brakes slowly it the pitch of the noise changes untill it goes. ANY IDEA'S..... i was thinking it might be the cv joints but they where change about a month ago, and the problem was their b4 and after the new cv joints. I'm currently thinking it might be the back or front brakes binding or rubbing but if so why would i do it when i turn in one direction.

It's the front pad touching the disc. The pad is taken off the disc by momentum when you turn the wheel. Could be a worn out pad scraping metal to metal on the disc so check your pads ( you could just look through the wheel to see if there's plenty of pad) or you might have even picked up a stone wedged between the pad and the disc in which case it will grind away to dust by itself in time or sometimes driving backwards and applying the brakes will clear it. A sticking caliper piston will also hold the pad on the disc in which case it'll need stripping down and freeing off

If you're not convinced and you want to eliminate the rear brakes then, on a clear road, try using your handbrake alone. No difference? It's the front brakes!

Sorry I was giving a reply for if the sound STOPS when you turn the wheel. If the squealing starts when you turn the wheel then very often that's the front wheel bearing worn especially if it ceases when you apply the brakes as applying the brakes centres up the wheel

brakes

Brakes are vital to a car's stopping ability.
Get it looked at ASAP as the consequences aren't
worth thinking about. See the other post about knackered brakes. When were your brakes last serviced?

Paying for servicing hurts your wallet, accidents kill.

Wheel bearing most likely.

Brian, the pads on disc brakes touch the discs all the time. There are no return springs or anything to lift the pads off the disc. When you lift off the pedal the pressure on the disc is released but the pads di stay in contact with it.

Yes that's right Tom, the pads are in contact with the disc but only the merest touch. They are pushed back by the high spots of the disc so they are hardly touching the disc at all. If they were touchng to any significant level then the brakes would be red hot and burn out in no time.

Weren't the CV joints changed recently on this one? I wonder if the wheel bearing was tightened properly?

But there should be no high spots on the disc, otherwise you get judder ;)

A disc surface is more like the surface of the moon if you look at it through a microscope. There's always high spots and low spots when you talking thousands of an inch. More than enough to push the pads off the majority of the disc. It's easy for a disc run out to be 0.10mm (0.004") and that's a lot of difference between high and low points. The max runout for a Bravo is quoted as 0.15mm (.006").

brakes

i'm gonna change both back and front bracks anyway becuase i'm sure it not as sharp as it use to. basically the problem must be the bracks becuase when i press it down slightly but progressivly i can hear the pitch of the noise change to the point it eventally stops... and if i'm really gental i can brack release brack and change the pitch of the sound. The only thing that throwing me is the turning thing...if i drive round a long right hand bend i can hear it squealing/ sweaking noise( like black taxi's squal... soon as i turn back it stops. never dose it when driving to the left... and always stops when bracking. even stop when u press the bracks so soft that u aint slowing down ie the lights are just on. thanks for the replies... i'll came back when pad are change

Brakes

I had this exact same problem,

The drivers side rear pads were sticking in the guide that attatches to the brake disk itself. Spoke to my local fiat specialist, cleaned up the guide for the pads(scraped off gunk and filed off the rust!)

No problems since, good as new.

Hope that helps,

Matt

ok i've check the pads, they are thick, so it can't be them. i really can't think what it is. It don't squal stright away, only after say 10 minutes of driving and braking. It not the back pads becuase when i drive and pull the hand brake the noise still continues, it only when i apply the front brakes, the noise stops. Even driving at 50/60/70 mph the noise can be heard. The brake fluied tank is just above min, power steering fluid is ok and it brakes fine.

ANYONE GOT ANY IDEA'S ?????????????????????? ??????????????

i had a squealing i was putting down to brakes until i realised it happened when stationary with the brakes on if facing down hill, turned out to be an engine mount

Jayfish......... it definatly something to do with bakes becuase when i apply brakes, even slight ( SO JUST THE LIGHTS COME ON) the noise starts 2 change in pitch till it stops. as soon as i release the brakes it starts, up hill or down hill.... the other thing is some times in a stright line it won't squal, but when i turn right it squals, and get prgressivly worst. If i stop for like 30min and start drving the noise is gone, but start up after 10-15 min

well the above theories were all more likely than mine, badly aligned pads, breakdust accumulation or a trapped stone. just like to cover all the bases :)

i'm starting to think it may not be brack pads, i resently had to change my cv joints becuase they were clicking/grinding when i turned. this squaling problem was their b4 and after the new joints. the squaling also happens mainly when i turn slightly to the left or the right in the centre it not to bad, it more intermittent
