2001 mpi Lost all power and won't start. Turns over and wants to catch but won't start any ideas. At the side of the road now

listen fro fuel pump running as you turn ignition on..
no pump.. = look for reset button under front pass.seat ??
jumped cambelt is another possiblity.. not bad new on these engines ; - }

Managed to get her started and moved to a better location. As soon as I let of the revs and put my foot on the clutch she cut out again.
so - do you need throttle to start..?,
or has it lost the ability to idle..??
no warning lights.. sound like it's running on all 4 @ 1200 rpm..??

Yes throttle to start, lost ability to idle, engine management light on when you try and start it came on when it cut out, but is of when I get her running, running on all 4

Cut out going up a hill if that helps

Just got her home in first high revs all the way to keep her running.

Yea its a 2001 mpi
If crank sensor it usually won't show up directly (the ECU thinks the engine isn't turning over, it seems, so doesn't think anything can be wrong). Still, always worth a code read.
Check fuel level, code read, report back.

Code reader order express delivery. Put a small jerry can of fuel in just to make sure, now up to a quarter.

Crank sensor looks really grubby, would giving it a clean/ wipe hurt?
I've never seen a clean one, but it can't hurt. Get down your local scrappy, it's only wee and my golden rule of "if it fits in your pocket, it's free" applies
yes the gap between the sensor and the pulley is important, clean it up and see if it helps!
They just don't seem reliable ... it's a fiat thing lol

Worth a go -- I'd not remove it, just blast it with something like WD40. They are fussy things.

Ok so she started and ran fine for me to move her forward and reverse here in to the garage. gave it a wipe with a cloth.
Will wait for the reader to arrive to see what it throws up.

mmmm, sounds even more like crank sensor if it worked fine once it had cooled down.. If you have had an eml come on and its the crank sensor at fault it will normally be reporting a misfire or coil issue rather than crank sensor. Although on few occasions i have seen them report crank sensor but car tends to not run at all which i think is is the sensor is sending ecu a constant signal rather than an erratic or just no signal.
