More problems than fun with a Multi... or maybe they too sensible for funnies :p

OK. We've had our 52 plate JTD since March and we love it! It's big enough for 6 (obviously) and small enough for around town. It's reasonably economical and hasn't given us any grief.
We had a 3l TD Toyota Granvia before the Multi and that was a really lovely motor. 7 Seats and all the bells and whistles but as it was primarily my wife's car she found it too big for day-to-day and at only 23ish mpg was beginning to be a big heavy cost-wise.
A friend of my wife bought a 56 plate facelift Multi, my wife drove it and said that we had to get one. We both prefer the "ugly bug" to the new ones. It's great, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

YEY!!(y) thats a gorgeous pic!, your multi is very photogenic! Funny, i thought i only loved the Multi in black, but ive seen a silver one i like and your green one is lovely! Maybe i should keep an open mind for my colour choice:)

We got our brand new car two weeks ago and last weekend I went camping with my 3 children and a friend and her son. It was roomy enough to fit us all in - plus the camping gear. Lovely drive too.

Our Multipla is black and square and it looks a bit like a taxi. I'd have loved it in red. Maybe I can accessorise with some stickers.

We live opposite a school and I can say for sure that there's no other like ours amongst the 400+ families.

Got me a 2000 Multipla as a second car, nice and cheap from Ebay. Mainly got it as the kids were complaining too much about their legroom when Dad was driving :D.

Picked it up and took the kids for a drive they love the room and the tables between them are a winner.

Does need a bit of TLC but I'm actually enjoying getting my hands dirty.

Everyone in my area with kids knows my car as the Freaky Frog  thanks kids, All in all I can say I love the Frog.

Considering getting it repainted form the grey but still not sure

hehee @ "freaky frog"!!:D:cool:

Yes my six year old thought it was a funny name, then told all her friends when they were walking to school right past my car.

All kids wave at me now and even parents come up and ask "What car actually IS a freaky Frog?"

I think the name will be sticking :D

I've owned mine for over 2 years now, and have criss-crossed the country visiting friends and relatives in it, doing some 20000 miles in the process. it's a 2000 jtd, and has 104000 on the clock. I originally bought because my then girlfriend has two kids, but after we split I kept it, and occasionally still give them lifts. Previously I had a Cinquecento Sporting and it was a bit cramped with modern child seats in...
It's a dark metallic blue, quite a sober colour which seems out of keeping with the whackiness of the looks, but that didn't stop my brother memorably describing it as a melted toad, so now everybody calls it either the frog or the toad (I prefer the latter).
When I got it, it had new tyres and so far I've only had to replace the fronts. I've also had the common alternator belt problem (the second time the penny dropped and they replaced the tensioner), a crank sensor failure, a cracked windscreen, the front spring recall and the wear compensators for the back brakes.
I had a mishap involving a lorry veering across the road that destroyed a wing mirror and shattered the side window
And that's it. Reading some of the horror stories on this forum, I'm going to touch wood now but it has done me proud, cruises on the motorway beautifully, sips at diesel and has a nice and loud stereo. I honestly can't think of another car I'd like and really only the width is a handicap. Seating 6 in comfort is an occasional but useful bonus though.
I love the dash layout, the high-mounted gearlever, the smooth handling, the quietness at speed, the wide open spaces inside. I'm not so keen on the silly handbrake position, the seatbelts that don't spring back properly and the irritating squeaks from the front brakes. And the drivers seat can be a bit uncomfortable after 3 hours solid.
The make-or-break thing with Fiats seems to be the dealerships. My local one, Northgate in Canterbury, are so good I don't even bother phoning round the independents any more. An example is the windscreen: Autoglass originally quoted me £569, Northgate eventually did it for £240.

I love our multi(2002 JTD)! Sure it has got some annoying features.... Most annoying has to be the electric height adjuster for the drivers seat.... More than once I've found the seat belt getting tight as I'm driving along the motorway (I guess I'll have to learn not to put my leg there!).

We've fitted an upgraded sound system including DVD screens, a couple of amps and a 15" sub, and we still don't have too many rattles!

We've been looking for a replacement, and sure theres plenty of MPVs to choose from, most have better specs but don't make you smile as you walk towards them!

Its amazing how much stuff you can get in the back of one of these things, they are HUGE when the seats are out!

Overall I'd say you won't find an MPV that'll make you feel as good as a multi does!

Freaky Frog :( nah mines most deffinatley a Hippo!

May i say thanks to Emm for actually getting people on here talking :worship:
Ive been on many Alfa forums with great friends made over the years but this forum has allways felt a bit dead when it comes to off topic and in the short space of time ive noticed you here your posts seem to have a positive affect:).

I've had my Multi JTD115 ELX for two months now and I love it. Every time I look at it, inside or out, it makes me smile. Every other car I've gotten into since makes me feel claustrophobic. It handles superbly, it's frugal, super quiet for a diesel and has plenty of poke (now I've cleaned out the EGR). It'll take three adults plus 3 mountain bikes and all the gear without any hassle. Our kids fight for the middle seat at the front, the dashboard has got a robot face on it and it's got two sunroofs! Love it!

The best things about these cars it's so easy to "sell them out".

Most people make stupid faces and hate the car. But when I show them the car from the inside and all the GOOD features: 11 cup-holders, tables, glove boxes, trays etc. They all love or like the car.

I often use the sentence: It's the Top Gear car of the year 2000. If they are hard to convince. (Top Gear is quite popular here in Iceland)

Mine was great when I had it about 3 years ago. 2001, petrol and space frog shaped. Obviously got lots of ridiculing but that wasnt a problem.

Bought it with a snapped cambelt and in a bit of a state.

Changed the engine, cleaned it, fitted antiroll bar links, fitted a handbrake cable and then drove it all over the country giving lifts to mates and mountain biking. Even managed 36mpg on one tank.
Sold it for a bit of a profit but also as the cheapest on the market at the time so everyone was happy.

The girlfriend is now pregnant so pondering going down the Multipla or Doblo route at the moment. The reason for being unsure the multi was just a tiny bit short to get my bike in when dirty and getting a baby in and out with the extra width and conventional doors may be difficult.

In the last 4 days our Multipla has:

Taken 3 adults and 3 bikes to Wales
Taken a king size mattress and old TV and a load of other junk to the tip with 3 passengers.
Taken 6 people on a day out to Wales in total comfort.

Averaged 44mpg in the process!

What a great car!

We got our first Multi in 2001, a turquiose petrol one, great car but found the mpg a bit of a pain, so traded up to a Dark blue 52 JTD the next year.

As others have said you cannot find a more practical car and it puts a smile on your face,

But we got posted to the US for 6 years soon after so she had to go, never did find anything as practical over there.

Anyway got back to the UK and my first purchase was a new Fiat 500 as a fun car but very impractical as a family car, so the hunt began for a cheap second hand multipla, which ended 2 weeks ago with my current 54 reg JTD again in the dark blue. I was so happy to find a cheap 54 on the last of the old shape, I really did not want a facelift model, so hope to get several good years out of this one, now we are an all Fiat family again

:)Ok. Happy story.:)

:DOn Sunday August 2nd, 10 of us from all over the country attended my little Multipla meet called a 'Sandwich Short Of A Picnic.'

It was held on the Historic Sandwich Guildhall Forecourt and the day started with arrivals at 10am and a gathering and display of our Multi's for the general public. We had free tea and buns served all day from our gazebo and had information on the Multipla displayed as well as info on our chosen charity and Sandwich town itself.

At 1200hrs we then had a tour of the historic Guildhall itself which lasted about an hour and raised £60 for the Mayor of Sandwich's charity fund. We saw everything from a mace dating from 1435 to an Elizabethan courthouse that was still in service as a magistrates court until 1987.

At about 1.00pm we gathered again on the forecourt for more tea and most importantly our lunchtime chips from the local fish shop. Lovely.

2pm came round and we saddled up and convoyed our Multiplas to the seaside town of Deal, about a six mile run, where we passed another shocked but terribly excited Multi, with much hooting and waving! Great fun. After doing a very amusing lap of a very full main car park, we eventually parked up and about twenty adults, ten kids and four dogs all made there way to the prom and strolled straight up the pier. We sang Happy Birthday to Nadia, who celebrated her fourth birthday that day and we ate her splendid cake on the end of the pier before the lure of an hour on the beach and an ice cream was too much to stand. We spent a splendid hour sitting on the shingle, dribbling ice cream down our tops and watching the kids having a whale of a time.

Time moved on and at about 4.30 some made their way off as they chose and farewells were said, while the seven left convoyed back to Sandwich for a final brew and to reflect on the day. Mostly strangers drawn together by only one thing in common, our Multiplas.

A great day was had by all, some having camped for the weekend, some travelled three hours to be with us for the day and one family even using it as the start of their weeks holiday.

Happy story? Yes indeed. And watch this space for A Sandwich Short Of A Picnic 2010 - The Weekender! (y)

Just returned from a 500 mile trip in the Multi - 6 people plus luggage up and down the ultra steep roads of Pembrokeshire - no problem. And 46mpg. The 3 x 2 seating made it so convivial too. Shame that Fiat are bottling out with a conventional seating arrangement for the 2010 Multipla. It's like straightening the Leaning Tower of Pisa if you ask me. Brilliant car. Flawed genius, but genius nonetheless...
