Snow in October.

Snow in October.

Either you want a small light Tiny engined car
As they seem to skip over the snow easily
Or a Nice Diesel Lump to cut through the snow

Over heavy and you cant move anyway :)

Abs + Snow = Pointless, it doesn't allow you to build up the snow wall with the tyres when braking
Where as Non Abs pulsating slowly is better to slow down :)

ziggy

If your braking that hard to build up a wall of snow you have locked the wheels and wont stop in a controlled manor surely?

Or winter tyres and ABS.... Tyres still have grip ABS keeps the wheel rotating exposing clear tread and Sipes which in turn lets you steer to avoid what your braking for

My HGT was fab in the snow. Just keep it smooth. My Seicento (a skateboard at the best of times) was a nightmare on ice.

But to anyone thinking of buying fancy wide alloys - wait until spring. In winter good tyres on steels are ideal. Full winter tyres might not be ideal in most of England/Wales as they overheat at speed ware rapidly and we generally dont get enough snow to justify the downsides.

Now I have said that we'll get lathered with snow.

BTW it could well be global warming. New York often gets snow in winter but its level with Madrid. UK is level with Nova Scotia and should the FF-cold. But we kept warm by the North Atlantic Conveyor which takes warm water off the Gulf Stream. All the ice now melting in the Arctic has changed the ocean salinity so the conveyor isnt so strong. Also the Jetstream more often changes direction to flow from the north rather than the west.

Anyway, gas and fuel prices are high so it stands to reason we should get snow. :p
Its a conspiracy.

all tyres get warm at speed  but the area thats in contact with the road gets cooled on contact..... Winter tyres are supposed to go on when the temp hovers about 7^C which most of last winter it struggled to push that even at lunch time

Most of my commutes to and from work were before sun rise and after sun set when the temperature began to drop rapidly...... If anything they (winters) wear slower in the cold than summers due to the different rubber compounds used. summer tyres become "brittle" and the surface layer shears off rather than wears away......

And supprisingly they are not just for snow they are good on cold wet greasy roads too and far better on ice than summer tyres

He's actually right Andy :) On loose snow and on gravel you're way better off without ABS. If you lock the front wheels on snow of gravel you build up snow/gravel against the front of the tyre and it slows you down rather quick :) Used to love driving my 504 on gravel, of course you don't want to do that in a corner. It's quite common for Finns to pull the ABS fuse in the winter :) Personally I'd rather have ABS in the winter purely because you don't always have fresh snow and in more or less all other conditions ABS is best :)

In all honesty with the Pirelli P400 M+S snow tyres I had on it you could brake harder on gravel than you could on tarmac :)

where as on a 4x4 driving course on a gravel strewn decent your told to lift off the brakes as gravel builds up then the vehicle skates along on it rather than making purchase to on the ground

heard about them Pulling the ABS in the past (mate used to set off with the handbrake on in his honda after about 20 metres the ABS would cut out and put the warning light up) and not come on/ reset till restarted

In a straight line it's fine, but you really do NOT want to lock your brakes on a loose surface on a corner as you just skate off.

Complete crapola. I've run winter tyres the last two winters and they've never overheated and haven't worn quickly.

As for trusting the Daily Hate for your weather, that's a definite (n) James Madden from Exactaweather is a charlatan. As Dave said you can't really predict weather more than a week away...... That said snow in October is hardly rare anyway. It just sounds early. Heck, we had snow here in North Wales in June -> http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-north-west-wales-13731216 .

Read Mr Madden's forecasts and you'll see there's nothing specific about them. "I expect to see the first signs of some moderate to heavy snowfalls as early as October or November in certain parts of the UK" Yeah? Well I predict a widespread rising of the sun in the east in the morning  Will it happen? Of course it will and it's unusual for "certain parts of the UK" to NOT have snowfall as early as October or November.

Please stop reading newspapers and getting your weather from there. The papers are a bunch of mongs when it comes to all subjects, especially weather.

Now how many people actually died during the cold snap? Not 60,000 I can tell you that!!!!

My mother in law reads the express and will happilly tell you how hot/cold/rainy/windy/snowy it's meant to be outside when it's the complete freaking opposite.
