Had a 'stuck in gear' situation at the weekend and the garage has just called to say that a gear change cable has snapped.

They are very contrite about the fact that the only source they have for this is Fiat and they want £140-ish for a pair (garage recommends changing both).

I've been on e-Bay, but info there is confusing.

So, I need to ask our home-grown experts here:

Any known 'other sources' for cables?

Is it really necessary (or desirable) to change both?

Part number?

Are cables 'handed' or interchangeable?

Car is a 2004 1.2 8V Active

Thanks for all or any help!

Just checked this on ePER for your car and you'll need one of these and one of these. Probably wise to replace both, unless there is an obvious reason for failure on the broken one (dust cover perished and cable corroded for instance).

Hi mate,

Shop4Parts have them for around £30.00 each not including the Fiat forum discount. Look HERE

The cables are not interchangeable.

You could replace just the one that has snapped, but if the other one is stiff or worn then it might aswell be replaced

the gear selector cable only breaks ,identified by a ball joint connection on the gearbox rather than a square black adjustable top
cheapest solution is obviously ebay s/h complete assembly or local breaker
i can see that garage would rather do both in case other broke but it really is an unnecessary expense to you
