Hello

So driving home from work yesterday, my shift gear notification has gone a bit weird on the display.

It doesn't tell me to shift up in gears anymore, well once every now and then only between 3rd gear and 4th. And when coming to a slow down it just says shift down no matter what gear I am in.

Anyone know what this fault could be and if anyone else has had it? Is it something possibly to do with the cambelt issues that am having or is this a separate issue?

Nothing to do with the cambelt.

It’s a complex system that determines which gear the car is in using a sensor near the gear-lever-end of the control cables, but also takes info from the ECU to establish speed, engine load, throttle position and more. I’d start by ensuring the sensor is correctly positioned.
What does the sensor look like and easy part to replace and fix? What's the part called incase I need to get my own?

Follow the links from the forum menu to ePER, the online Fiat parts catalogue and you’ll see it there. I doubt the sensor has failed, more likely just slipped out of place.

I doubt wonder though if your car has suffered from being water damaged in the past, as several of the issues you’ve had all stem from problems with the electronics, which don’t take kindly to getting wet (eg the car has been through over-deep floodwater or maybe inundated on a driveway)

I don't know, not since I have had the car have I had any water problems, but not sure about anything in the past? Can I view the sensor myself or is it under the car somewhere that will need a mechanic ramp?

Look at ePER and you’ll see where it is (part way down the shift cables near the gear-lever in the car).

Thank you :) so is this accessible from the inside of the car or outside?
Look at the diagram. Those are the cables inside the car just underneath the gear-lever on the dash. You need to remove the gaiter and plastic trim round the lever and may need to remove part of the dashboard too. (Trawl around the rest of ePER and you’ll see it all there). Not difficult to access but needs care to avoid breaking plastic trim parts.

Are we sure on this

Looks like it could possibly be a red herring to me

Part 10 looks like a neutral sensor for the start stop system to me

Gear shift indicators are normal via the ECU,ABS

Using road speed and rpm it know what gear you are in without the added cost of a sensor

The shift up is normally lower when the engine is colder

Agree - reads speed, throttle position, engine load. Also, this hasn’t been mentioned again since May so maybe this issue is one that has been resolved?

These things seem to live a life of their own. DO nothing just observe for a week or two. Sometimes I get nothing and sometimes I get the car giving its advice. If I drive a couple of hundred miles fast and use the gears the system changes how it reacts. If I return to pottering around locally at low speed it seems to take awhile to re adapt. I think there is some self learning going on. Dont assume its broken.

I will depend on engine temperature, but other things will come into it, if your going up hill you need more revs before changing. Down hill less, it will probably try and adjust to save the engine also

Its probably got an eco mode that limits the throttle response , which may or may not be part of the problems in other threads

Thanks. My version doesn't have an eco button anywhere.

I wonder if you are expectiing too much of your car. The 1.2 is not rapid and quite leisurely under 3800 rpm. The VVT needs to be working well too. You have done all the things that make a difference you need to look up car specifications and look at the power and torque curves for the engine to understand if the feel matches expectations from those. Have you driven any other 1.2s to compare? Go find another and take a test drive. Also, I wouldnt even consider E10 in my cars because it seems to kill the performance stone dead. Use some Redex petrol treatment.

So your saying use E5, would it not be overkill for this type of engine?

The car isn't idling well
And almost stalling
When hot the exhaust start shaking
