Technical Shell V Power

Technical Shell V Power

If supermarket fuel is just fine then why has there never been a time when the big petrol companies have sold contaminated fuel across the nation like Morrisons and Tesco have?

My wife once had an escort which had an engine which was damaged by dodgy Tesco fuel and as soon as the AA man turned up he said "Did you fill up at the Tesco station @ place x because we've dealt with about 50 people just this morning who have?" then when she filled the Subaru up with Tesco fuel because there was nowhere else close, the engine check light came on and didn't go off till it had a tank of V-Power run through it.....

Would you go and buy your groceries in a Shell store? Probably not. So why go buy your petrol from a supermarket where they've got a history of selling bad petrol?

I personally never buy petrol from a supermarket because of this thing a few years ago...

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I filled up with V-Power for the first time the other day and have been pleasantly surprised at how much more responsive the engine (1.2) is when cold.

Usually fill up with standard Texaco or Shell petrol, but as it was only an extra 3p a litre more I thought I'd give it a punt(y)

There isn't any discernible difference in acceleration etc, but the car is definitely running smoother and quieter over the first few miles when cold.

I've no doubt there's a bit of a placebo effect going on, but I certainly think there is some benefit to be had. I feel as though I've been converted anyway!:D

Makes a big difference in a Turbocharged 500, especially with a tuning box fitted!

Unfortunately, my nearest Shell garage is a 50 mile round trip, so of the 28,000 miles i've done in mine, only 500 or so have been with V-Power. At least then i can really feel the difference when i do treat the car to some! :D

Our 500 currently has v-power in it and did its best MPG on the last fuel up on v-power but I have to be honest and say that i'm not sure if it would have done that on regular shell fuel or sainsburys fuel or whatever.

Absolutely no difference whatsoever when I used some in my Focus last July.

This was totally in error (in too much of a hurry). At the time I thought it cost a fortune at £1.249 per litre!

Re: Supermarket fuel - It all comes from the same place! Only the additives are different IMO.

Then why didn't this affect BP, Shell and co?

Well, strictly speaking, it was an additive problem.

It saved me a fortune - killed some bit in my Merc (I forget what it was - sorry, am not very mechanical) which that nice Mr Morrison paid to replace. Saved it being replaced at a service about a year later.

And I got a free full tank of fuel.

Have to say I have avoided Morrisons since then though....

Of course it was an additive problem, but these always seem to happen to the far more often to the supermarkets rather than the Shell's, BP's and Esso's....

I have noticed over a period of time various petrol stations shut down while they have new underground fuel tanks installed.

Could this be the reason why why there is such discrepancy in the quality of fuel from different outlets, when it may be caused by water/mineral contamination to the tanks?

Yeah I know what you mean, consumption has never been an issue since we've had the car anyway, so I don't know if it will make a great deal of difference in that respect.

I'll stick with it for a few tanks anyway and see how things go. Am quite happy to just benefit from the improved refinement that I've seen so far in the mornings to be fair.

Well I always wonder if you can be sure it's just the fuel though, it's warming up now which of course makes your engine run a bit smoother on startup.

I Just use the cheapest petrol in fuel stations, i used to put v power in the audi every 3-4 fill ups as i had heard that it contains alot more additives and cleaners in it, but everytime i put v power in it, i always seem to drive it like i stole it as it did seem alot smoother in the gears. but im not gonna use v power in the 500 unless fuel comes cheaper again.

I have to fill the car up tomorrow for the second time so I shall try this and check for any improvement.

It will make more of a difference with a turbocharged car, the Subaru runs far far better with a nice tank of BP ultimate or V Power in its belly.

do some reserach on Thorney Motorsport, those guys are very capable (y)
I never said they weren't. But a 20% increase in economy from a slightly higher octane fuel? nah.....

That's the only evidence I've ever seen that has shown anything more than a bees dick (official scale of measurement) of difference between 95 and 98/99 octane fuel.
