severe weather warning.....

Nope but I'm not employed in my county so nearest would be pretty much where I work anyway.
Loving the neighbours attempt at a snowman :) About a foot of snow here.
Ah I see :) Well my wifes at work today but it's absolutely hammering down with snow now :D

Flash warnings going round at work here - we're expecting "accumulations of up to 25cm" Whatever planet you are from, that's a significant dumping of snow in an area that is not used to it.

Even the Met Office's website has my area in red for "take action" - I wonder what action this is anyway? Wooly hat and a hot water bottle in bed?

Whoops.

Had my first scary moment on ice today. Down a hill towards a mojor road from a minor (back roads) and car no stopping! ABS and everything. I though ****, this is it, get ready to be t-boned. Was only doing about 4MPH, but car would not stop!

Really lucky nothing was coming! :)
abs don't work if all 4 wheels lock, it just thinks you have stopped. its back to old fashion peddle pumping when that happens

ABS is worse than useless on ice. You need to be able to lock the wheels.

You can use the handbrake to lock the rears at least; but go very slowly at all times.

By the way, these new automatic parking brakes are a pig in this weather too. A colleague in a Renault has been unable to control the thing on compressed snow because the car thinks it knows best, and there isn't a proper handbrake to modulate the rear brakes. Technology overkill.

On some cars you can turn off the ABS; can you on Fiats?

on snow locking the wheels can be usefull, but on ice the last thing you want to do is lock the wheels!! once the wheels lock you have no control over the car.

I'd agree with that definitely. On gravel you can brake quite will just by locking up and having the gravel build up against the front of the tyres.

i think we should have a game of 'guess the car'
