Hi all,

Only had the car a month, has been fine until just now.

As I'm driving along the car is is 1st, then as it prepares for 2nd there is some clicking/clunking and it skips to 3rd, if I go to try 4th,it does the same. Thing and skips to 5th.

The car revs and drives fine?

Any ideas?
Electrical or mechanical?

Help!
 
Ok, the car, being Italian has decided to work fine today, although is still a little bit clunky through the gears.

I reckon based on the age (10years) and mileage (65k) it needs a new clutch.

Anyone else got any suggestions?
 
Perhaps flush and change the gearbox oil - the oil in the mechanical part of the gearbox, NOT the Selespeed fluid. I would add some engine flush and drive for a day or two, then drain and replace with Tutela ZC75.

Before deciding to replace the clutch, check the Clutch Degradation Index reading in MultiECUScan. If it needs replacing, it'll be over about 12,000.

Hi there,

Thanks for this advice. I didn't realise there were TWO gearbox fluids?!
I recently had it in the garage, they replaced a drive shaft seal and the fluid, so would that be the "mechanical" fluid or the "selespeed" fluid they would have changed? - Sorry for sounding dim.

The engine had a oil change at the same time as the above was being done, so it SHOULD be fine.

Also I do not have Fiat ECU software but I am looking to get it in the near future? As im new to this (owning a Fiat/Semi Auto) im not sure where to start. It sounds really handy though.
 
actually, if anyone in the Sussex area has a MultiScan ECU is would love it if they could show me how it works, I would even be happy to pay you for your time.

They'll have been the gearbox oil, not the hydraulic CS Speed fluid.
 
Ok. Garage says both fluid reservoirs are full, so that seems fine. My wife has driven the car today and says it has been fine with no issues.... So no idea.
 
Right then. Well the issue has started again. The car tried to change up...there are 3 loud clicks or clunks, then the car revs really high then skips several gears.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?

The car is a 2.4 Abarth Selespeed.

Please help. I love this car and would hate to get rid of it.

As above, plus, I would suggest a recalibration (EOL calibration in the software) - if there is a selection fault, it will probably be flagged up during the calibration process. For example, potentiometers report the position of the gear selectors to the ECU. If these potentiometers have an erratic output, that could explain the problem and a calibration will also fail. However, I've never seen or heard of a potentiometer problem on the Stilo.

Any logged fault codes will provide clues. You really need that software; it's impossible to achieve much without it. In the meantime, here are a couple more ideas:

Is it possible that the selector lever is sloppy (many seem to be) and is actually sending a double pulse? Do you find the same behaviour from the lever as from the steering wheel paddles? The paddles are a particularly nasty tin-diaphragm switch and if they split/fail/don't 'click' properly, they probably "contact bounce" - perhaps test with the paddles unplugged inside the steering wheel.

Also check operation in Auto mode and note that if you click "+" from 1st, you'll often get 3rd because the Auto mode was going for 2nd at the instant it received the "change up" command.

Is it possible that the garage has put the wrong oil (too thick/not synthetic) in the mechanical part of the gearbox? Try to find out what they have used. Consider a flush with engine-oil-flush-additive as I suggested before.

If it skips gears while changing up, how does the engine rev really high? I don't quite understand. Is the clutch slipping?

Not really a reply - more an additional twist. Stilo selespeed 2005.
Yesterday, when the car was starting from cold, I tried to change up just after I started off and it changed into 2nd. It would not change up to 3rd even when it was going fast enough and then the gearbox fault message came up. I tried again today but the result was the same. I am only using the stick as the up paddle has broken but it has worked fine on that for months. This seems to be electronic as there are no strange noises or jolts.
Any different advice, please?
 
well the car us back to normal again! It's like it sorts itself out after about 3 to 5 miles of driving through.

I usually drive on auto, one of the paddles doesn't work so I use the stick if I want to change up.
I tried manual, same issue (when it was happening)

That's right the car would attempt to change gear, so would disengage the clutch, try to slot a gear, disengaged again, revs up, then skips to the next gear. At one point it was going from 2nd to 5th.

I will get the software and a connector. See what's up. Which connector do I need?

The fluid wasn't changed recently.
