Hi everyone,

My car seems to have some slightly aggressive rust patches on the underside of the chassis. My plan is to remove the rust completely using elbow grease and just wanted all you guy's wisdom with this.

I want to make the underside look like it came out of the Melfi Plant factory.

Can anyone recommend any products to use that would prolong the life of my little Fiat?

Cheers, Steven.

you need Jenolite Rust remover, nothing works as well as this stuff (i've owned landrovers so i know) basically converts the rust into iron Phosphate (which is a white powder) you can dust off when finished and be left with clean bare metal.

paint over it with what ever you want. coat of red oxide primer and apply your top colour or black under seal.

you should never really need elbow grease if needs be a wire brush on a grinder will make light work of rust to. just make sure you wear goggles

don't be fooled by similar products, Kurust and alike they are expensive and don't work, Jenolite was developed for use on RAF airframes so you know its gonna be good.

the problem comes when you are left with holes in the metal which you really need to fill with metal

Dont just repair the "rusty" patchs

If the car is starting to rust in places - start working on it now and protect it properly

Winter is what actually makes car rust faster - with wet and cold with added road salt and constantly been sand blasted, it doesn't take long

Get on with it while the weather is nicer - Clean - Treat - Protect, it can add years onto a cars life if its clean underneath

aye similar problem with a chariot what i thought was caked on dirt turned out to be large holes i could put my fist through, got 2 8 x 4 sheets of plating ready for my m8 to weld in,now you did mention body sealer,i have a gallon bucket and 6 aerosols for tight places.
did notice a fair price difference in aerosols from 3 euro to 14 euro do you find over in the uk some are better with the salt.:)

Thanks for the replies guys! :)

Living on the West Coast of Cumbria the salty air has started to coat the chassis with the dreaded rust so I thought i'd better get my brush out and protect it.

I was definitely planning on doing it as a whole rather than just the rusted sections, covering every little detail to make the metal parts last as long as possible.

The plan was that I was going to remove the rust with a special rust-removing scouring then cover all of the sections with Hammerite Underbody Seal, but I thought if i'm doing that I may as well do it properly with some paint, then cover that with the underbody seal protecting it furthermore.

There should be an option when you buy new to get the chassis made from Aluminium ;) I'd be more than happy paying a little more to know it would out live me!:D

I've found Screwfix no nonsense Hammerite-like paint to be very effective, and fairly cheap.

I've also bought Dinitrol underbody seal spray, looks like it will do the job quite well, gives a good waxy finish, and gets good reviews.

Don't be too fussy - it's a bit like doing the Forth Bridge.

Possibly, don't know their exact purpose, I'd read they are used for strapping during car transporation.

Get some cavity wax and a flexy straw on the end of the aerosol, spray inside. I think that's about the best you can do. Box sections are often drilled and plugged after wax injection, so no reason you couldn't do the same with those if necessary.
