vat and he goes yes, at this point he realised I was the customer who left the car that am...he fobbed me off by saying it was cus my car had more faults, when I asked how much for diag and battery replace he started to get rude by saying...well I thought I was sorting you out but if u want I can charge £76 and additional for every min after that.

I felt so angry and genuinely annoyed, but because I need it done by Fiat examiner, as previous garage couldn't get a read (even after charging old battery) I thought I'm goin to have to take this one on the nose, at least until Monday when its assessed.

Anyone has any views on this.

Garage in question is a Midland approved garage.

It's difficult to get a readout from the Italian cars made by the FIAT group. Würth has a diagnostic machine / software that can do it. It's called WUW: http://www.wurth.co.uk/divwowpack.php. The Norwegian AA use it, and hooks up perfectly to everything on the Stilo.

Ok moan about the garage - but you don't say what
problems you have with your car and why you need examiner
to read the fault codes.

There are alternatives www.fiatecuscan.net and a couple of
interfaces.

Well I explained to the front desk staff in advance the car was a non starter and that there were multiple error codes, that's no reason for the diagnostic to jump from £60 to £100 (with battery fitted) to £50 and when I query the new £50 fee he says that he was tryin to sort me out by taking any further investigations into account!!!

Will look into self diagnosis tools if all else fails...thank you.

I have got FES just outside Coventry if you need to clear some codes, can't do ABS or Airbag but other codes from engine side and CAN can do

Now im not normally one to supremisise Fiats customer service but judging by this thread i would say that there is bad communication on your part. Is English your first language? Sometimes people try to put things simply if there is some kind of language barrier. This can be a problem to foreign speakers if they understand english language better than they speak it.

AudiDynamic85 managed to get his Stilo to my place and we fitted a brand new battery(Varta). Car started first time, only error was the usual airbag error.

Car was ticking over perfectly for about 2 minutes, then the engine stopped, errors popped up all over the place.

Eventually got FiatECUScan configured on my spare laptop and scanned it. Only managed to find ABS? Eveytime I've scanned before I've always got Engine, ABS and Power Steering.

So my question is

What problem could cause these symptons?

Could a bad earth prevent FiatECUScan connecting to the power steering and engine computers?

Are you saying you're unable to read off any engine data at all? Even with engine running? or did it die before you had chance to connect?

Main battery neg to engine earth connection? That'll knock out the ECU and ABS and give poor charging

Engine - 1.6 16v

Yes, I'm unable to read any engine data at all. Died before I was able to connect the laptop.

ASR
Security
Air Bag
Loose Connection(think this might be the problem)

Where's the main battery neg to engine earth connection on a 1.6?

Try this
make sure you have good connections like crocodile clips and not just holding it and connect to check volts between battery neg and a shiny earth on engine with ign on. Should be well below 0.3v


Start engine- volts should still be well below 0.3v
When engine dies, watch voltmeter at the time, a sudden jump up in volts and that identifies that earth's your trouble


Check out the ECU wiring to ECU body earth C40, the small tag with black wire at bottom left of ECU 4 mounting bolts. This is the only ECU earth connection for the two ECU connectors


And of course earth C15

check fuel cut off switch and fuses

Yes that's it. Bit of a pig to get onto. I disconnected air intake at filter box and then tucked it up out of the way and then used longest ring spanner and then another ring spanner connected to that and gave it a thump with a soft faced hammer
