looking at Axel Gerst there are two widths of aluminium trim for the roof gutter, 10mm and 7mm. Site doesn't say if they were for different models, so does anyone know why there are two types and which one is best for a 1970 500L?

Lastly, how were these trims originally secured at the factory. At the rear of the trim, I've seen roll pins, rivets, bolts and even self tappers used :bang: Please tell me what's the recommended way of securing these.

Thanks, Steve

My 500L had a very small self tapper on each end.
You could use self tappers, rivets or clips like on Mini seam mldgs use.
They also do a self adhesive type as well, although tapes are really good now, they can be tricky to fit.

Sean's right, the self-tapper is the factory way. This just encourages rust in a very weak area of the metalwork.
I was also baffled on sizes so just chose at random; the size I have appears to be 10mm, but it depends where you measure from :bang:
I used the polyurethane sealant that I used elsewhere on the car. It was fiddly but just a sliver all along the gutter edge did it. It also secured the sill trim that many people leave off to avoid making holes for the clips. It needs securing in odd places whilst it cures so have some means ready; I used the rubber ended quick clamps that are for woodworking purposes.

Thanks for the replies, appreciated. I have some sikaflex and a tub of these in the garage...

So hopefully I'll be ok, and thanks for the info on the seif tappers. It seems I'll go for the 10mm as your looks good in your photos Peter.

cheers, Steve

Hi, I used mini seam trim, its 10m, easier to source and generally cheaper than from Fiat stockists. Originally small self tappers had been used by Fiat but had caused some corrosion of the gutter so I attached the new trim with a good superglue, just be careful you don't drip any onto the paintwork.
