Resetting the ECU???

Hello

Well my car was tested today before fitting cams etc... and it ended up with only 113 HP. This is a Marea 1.8 ELX from 1997, and I have fitted a K&N Kit, Sports Catalysator, Remus back box, and a Supersprint Sports Manifold from a Bravo GT. All this and still 113 which should be the amount from standard!!! I was thinking, could it be because i have not resetted the ECU by removing the ground from battery for 15 mins? Or this has nothing to do? Because I am very disappointed at the results :(

hmmm this is a very important cause for concern. Yogis, you better be right about having to reset the ECU after doing this stuff or i'll be a very sad sucker tonight.

Mind you, power can degrade itself after some time. A classic example is my friends Honda CRX Del Sol VTEC which claims a standard 130bhp but only marked 120bhp on the rolling road. The cause? Lack of servicing etc etc

Re: Re: Resetting the ECU???

Well I dont know what to do...
I will ask the mechanic tomorrow, dont know if i should reset it anyways since its getting a piggyback computer mounted, or perhaps i need to...oh god im so confused...but should have more than 113 hp!!!

Re: Re: Re: Resetting the ECU???

Remember the power figures quoted my the manufacturer are taken at the flywheel. By the time this is transfered to the wheels you looking at around 10-20bhp less!
If your cars making bang on the quoted bhp figure at the wheels now i'd be reasonably pleased.

Could also have something to do with the rolling road. When was it last calibrated, could have been under-reading.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Resetting the ECU???

Will have to ask him all these things tomorrow...
The figures from stock are not in the wheels then??
Hmmm...will be interesting to see what he says or suggests...

Re: Re: Re: Resetting the ECU???

I'm not really supprised that you have lost power. Resetting the ECU won't do a thing as the engine now has very different characteristics to the one its designed to run. The ECU can only go a few % from what it has been programmed to do.

You will have to wait for the piggyback ECU.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Resetting the ECU???

It also depends on the rolling road operator, each one has a slightly different way to get from wheel power to flywheel power.

You might get 2 roads giving the same power but the guys running it will probably give different engine power figures.

Doesn't matter what your engine power is, you could have 1000BHP and 900BHP of gearbox losses. :)

Hi

Yes I was thinking about the piggyback...
I should get for the cams and the piggyback anywhere from 25-35 HP on avg...maybe more maybe less...But thats for a stock egine I think...Perhaps it can be adjusted for all things I have and help even more...I certainly hope...

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Resetting the ECU???

2 things?

1) what is a piggyback ECU
2) how much r they

Martin

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Resetting the ECU???

Well it was in the flywheel...But he told me usually if you change a lot of things like this and dont do the ECU then u get nothing...So lets see how it goes after the cams are in and the ECU is programmed for all the components...

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Resetting the ECU???

Good luck mate...I am ordering my powerchip as well.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Resetting the ECU???

Well is not powerchip is a unichip piggyback...
This one is adjusted with a potentiometer in the dyno for everything at different RPMs and throttle...Chips are standard this is individual solution for every car for maximum performance...Should get my car back Monday or Tuesday now, since i had to change the cambelt now also...

For those interested:

Unichip is made by a company called Dastek, it has the advantages that it is individual for your specific car setup, and can also be removed leaving the engine as it was before:

Found a few places in the UK fitting them, the one I found the pic on was Ric Wood Tuning in Stockport.

Just do a search on Yahoo for Dastek +Unichip +UK
