Resetting the ECU

Hi there;

Planning to reset the ECU according to my New sparks & other enhancements so the car runs better :)

My babe is a 98' HGT Mk1.

Heard alot of scary stories about losing the key-codes but the RED key will cure that kind of problem. It does, doesn't it ?

After unpluging the battery how much do I have to wait ?

Some one suggested about a 1/2 hour but I need to be sure...

PS: I'm going to try the Bosch Super4 FR78 (0 242 232 501) on my HGT. Found a Brazilian official 2002 Bosch Spark Plug catalog via internet & got the codes on it. Luckily I've found the plugs and planning to give it a go... I'd experienced the SplitFire Triple titaniums before but these plugs seems & tells that they are better & of course cheap :)...

PS 2: Trying to adapt a vortex generator for the air intake system. Designed some blades but I do have to get some advices on them. Learned & read a lot on these so called performance enhancers but only this vortex gen. got my attention. I'll give it a go & if I succeed I'll sell(!) the know-how & blade design..:)

Any one, any comments welcome....

Cheers, Boorock

Yep, 30mins will be fine to reset the ecu.

Good luck with the vortex gen, let us know how it goes.

Thanx...

Thanx for the immediate reply.

Sure I'll inform everybody U'r my potential customers...:)

Ciao

Re: Thanx...

i use the Bosch Super plugs and they are very good.
when i have the cash im gonna get the HT leads to match too.

Dill.

re. ecu

please give reason why u r resetting the ecu coz i have a hgt and since ive installed air induction and exhaust ive seemed to have thrown my ecu out of sinc

Why resetting ?

ECU stores the most valuable info about the fuel/air ratios & the timings of ignition. After it is loaded with sufficient data (which is collected randomly) it will never change the settings...

Your HGT's ECU is loaded with your first drive/s.
The learning phase of the ECU will be completed after a few initial drives. Mostly about 30-50 kms. of continious drive.

So you can easily say that, while your car/engine gets older by collecting some residue, carbon etc. in the engine (combustion chamber & tappets, valves even on the sparks) the ECU settings remain the same unless you reset them :(

As you can easily assume, if your car is not brand new (factory out) you'r running/forcing your engine to use the initial (brand new settings) on the aged engine...

Most of the Japanese & American engines are advised to be resetted even after the spark plugs replacement...:)

You can define ECU resetting as re-tuning the engine for the current condition. Like the BIOS UpDate in the computers but with a huge difference : your PC never builds up deposits & resetting the ECU is far more easy than BIOS UpDate..:)
Also UpDating is done for better performance not to maintain the previous performance.

For the best performance before ECU resetting, have your injectors cleaned, air filter cleaned/changed, fuel filter changed(better to do it in every 5k in order to guarantee the cleanness of the injectors) etc..

Major changes in the air/fuel intake & exhaust replacements deadly need the ECU resetting.

Remember; today's modern engines can NOT tolerate any build ups or changes in the system. That's why they deteroiate...

Ciao..

re. boorock

cheers nice 1 . does that now mean if i resett my ecu by disconnecting the battery that the ecu will read the new values of the exhaust, air kit etc etc, and which key do i then run the car with and 4 how long

Re: re. boorock

Thats right, disconnect the battery for 30mins or so, reconnect and start the car using your normal blue key.
Then drive the car for about 20mins through variying rev ranges in different gears.

Re: re. boorock

Use the normal blue key(s), NOT THE RED ONE.

The Red key is to program blue keys into the ECU allowing them to start the engine. Your ECU should not lose the list of blue keys by disconnecting your battery for a short while (if at all).

Basically if the blue keys won't start the car then I think you put in the red key then the blues one after the other and then the red one again - all within 10 seconds, then the ECU will recognise them - this is the use of the red key.

As mentioned the ECU will 'learn' the setup after a few drives, just drive normally, well don't thrash it anyway as the lambda sensor ignores the settings when you give it some welly (apparently).

re.re.re.boorock

cheers lads ill do that now, problem is 2nd gear has been crunching a little for the last month and late last nite i lost 1st and reverse so once ive reset the ecu a mellow drive may be the best option
