Hi

I would appreciate the latest knowledge on this...

The main (ie remote) ignition key for my 100HP stopped working on Saturday. Initially the remote opened the doors but the key would not deactivate the immobiliser. Subsequently the remote locking has stopped working too.

Here's where I'm at:

I have the spare which works fine
I don't have the key code

What is the quickest/cheapest way to get back in business with a fully functional remote key so that I can return my spare to storage?

Thanks, Nick

The same thing happened to mine, except first the remote part wouldnt work.

Probably not what youre looking for but timpsons did me a normal key, no paper work or anything needed off my spare for £45 or £50.

Id be interested to know what fiat want for the remote key

I went to a Fiat specialist, who had to ring Fiat to get my security code, plus a replacement key on-top plus the recode. It cost me about £250-ish

Thanks for the replies. £250 is simply horrifying! I'm doing more research and will report back...

This is the reason I decided to buy a £10 Box with 2 unlock fobs from ebay (when mine broke). The way I see it my cars probably worth £1000 if the winds blowing the right way, so i haven't really got a lot to lose in depreciation from not having the correct Fiat stuff. unlock fobs still working after 6+ months + it means the GF can have one for when shes allowed to borrow the Panda :)

And what was your insurance companies view on this £10 bargain box? Any premium loading when declaring it as a modification

My local Fiat dealership charged about £45 to get the code from Fiat and program a key I had already that didn't work - thought that was steep enough - but £250

blimey! Glad I already had a key!

Im not based in England, and where I am has an even dimmer view of 'modding' than some of the ppl here. We have a separate MOT just for any mods. The insurance company didn't care, it had RCL and it got replaced with RCL.

I know someones going to say it'll be easier to grab the code, and get in to the car. If someone wants to sit outside and with a laptop and they can crack it and get past the immobilizer, they have earned it IMO and at least they wont have smashed the window doing it.

I'd love to keep my car all fiat main dealer, but its not worth anything anymore, so i cant see the point of spending 1/4 of the value of the car for a key. I can however understand your concern and that of someone with a more valuable car whose priorities may be different.

The code was only £20 from dealership.
New key was around £200 and then the recode about £30.

This was after 4 days of ownership, but I have a new shiny key and keyfob.

This is my first car for years without remote. Now, I'm beginning to feel pleased.
At least, it's one thing less to go wrong. I enjoy the novelty of actually putting a key in a lock and turning it!

Years ago, it was common to fit your own hidden/disguised cut-off switch so that hot-wiring wouldn't work. Now, if I could only bypass the chip in the key altogether, and rig my own security circuit, I would be a very happy man.

Sweetsixteen.

You can, it's easy get a spare transponder made and put it in a collar & switch the fuel pump.

The question is why you'd want to change the security of your car to that of a ford sierra.

In all honesty, unless you have to make up 10 keys for some reason the fiat keys are not too scary anymore. Let the transponder do it's job as it'll cost you the same for a spare as it will to bypass your system.

Has anyone had problems with the non-remote key? My remote operates the doors but the transponder doesn't work so I only have one net. I'm not worried about losing it but I am concerned about the transponder giving up.

I thought I would follow up my initial post with how it turned out -

Having being quoted c. £250 by my dealer to sort it i did some googling and came across these folks in Leicester -

http://www.autotronics.co.uk/cscart/remote-car-key-fob-repair-and-replacement/fiat/

They correctly identified the problem (water damage - don't go running with your key in your pocket when its raining...) and returned the key fixed inside a week. Cost? £50 all in with secure return delivery. No faffing with codes or anything.

Highly recommended.
