So I took the roof rails off today in preparation for painting. I think they will get a better finish with them out of the way. I am getting the top of the hatch painted too in answer to your question triumph7
It was a simple job to remove the bars and I'm sure anyone would manage without this, but I took pics in case anyone did want to see what's what?
First remove the end caps of the bars, fore and aft. They just pull up and off.
This is the front one. Be aware that the forward part is stuck with double sided tape so be careful you don't snap it.
This is the back one with the covers removed.
The front part of the bar here with the cover removed. I've already undone the Allen bolt here any you can see it.
Next remove the 2 little caps on the top of each bar. A small flat blade screw driver takes car of it. Take car not to scratch the aluminium bar.
There are some more 5mm Allen bolts buried in there. You'll need a longer Allen key for these. My socket set one wouldn't fit.
Once these are out the bars just lift clear.
You are left with these welded on brackets
And this is how the car looks without the bars for
The Pretender
When I put the bars back on I will be applying liquid threadlock to keep them in place.
