im thinking of removing the box before the back box, will this create any problems? i know it may fail its MOT buts its making a terrible noise as the baffles are loose, and i think there may be a hole in it. cheers for any help

I've got a 1.8 and my rear box fell off and the sound was ace after the engine warmed up. I wanted to keep it like it was but i was abit weary about the hot exhaust gases escaping under my petrol tank and underbody protection. I went to a place that did performance exhausts and asked them if they could weld on a piece of pipe to the back of the car and weld a tail piece on, but he wanted £75, NO WAY i thought.

Anyway, i went for this, a standard exhaust for my car cost me £100 fitted.

It goes from the Cat back on the HLX. Theres 3 Boxes from the Cat back. All three need to be replaced.

If your exhaust sounds like something pinking, then if you look under your car behind the rear silencer theres a shield there, rip it off and the pinking will stop. Mine corroded and was very flimsy and bounced on the exhaust at a specific rev.

doesnt the heat shield need to be there for a reason though? im pretty sure its just the box as it has a massive dent in it from where the previous owner has caned it over a speed bump or something! ive got a mate who can do welding so hopefully he can weld a pipe for alot cheaper than £75! was it really loud without the box on??
cheers for the reply

Not really loud, i've heard sports exhausts make alot more noise. It gives your car a deep bass note. I think it was ace, i miss it. Mines so bloody quiet now. :(

Is yours a 1.8 aswell?

The 1.8 has a different exhaust to the 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6. So if you dont have a 1.8 i cant say that it'll be quiet, i only know on the 1.8 it has a deep bass tone.

If you take the rear silencer off and the engines cold it sounds like normal, quiet, after the cat and engine warm up it turns into a nice deep tone. Trust me its like have a sports exhaust for free.

P.s the shield is there for something but i didn't care, however if you are removing the box it wouldn't matter anyway.

P.p.s MOT wise i cant see it failing for no Rear Silencer as its well below the dB limit, its just the Emissions that it requires to pass on.

i have the 1.6. the exhaust already has quite a deepish sound to it. not sure if this is cos the baffles are loose or not? anyway i shall see tomorrow. MOT isnt due til august so i've got until then to sort it out to pass the emissions test. thanks for the help :)

Beeson, I have removed the backbox that you are talking about.

It's very very quiet until you floor it then all hell breaks loose.

I don't think it will fail an MOT on this, only without a CAT.

Yeah, I guess it only sounds loud if you floor it. And as long as there is no blowing and all sealed properly then it should sound a-ok. far far far from over the top though.

Even with a Stainless Steel Induction kit:)
