Remote central locking installation *wiring diagram included*

Hi guys

I bought a remote central locking kit that includes boot release (not bothered about this, and understand i can't get it to work as i have to buy an extra peice of equipment to make it work...).
The kit I bought isn't a Fiat brand, bought it on ebay and it's made by 'max' or something lol i dunno. Anyways, I have no idea where to put what n where n how n why lol, so I went through the trouble of copying the wiring Diagram from the user guide that came with the rcl kit <3 *bow down to paint skills*
I've attatched it to this post...

Oh, and I got a mk2 Punto '03 1.2 8v if thats of any importance. I would say I'm pretty competant at installing it, I just need some (lots ;)) of help from you guys before I even bother messing up my car <3

Yep, I'm gonna stop talking now...

Help meeee :(

Ant

Well firstly I assume you already have central locking? In which case the kit will be designed to fit in the fusebox, which is down by the driver's right knee. All the wires you need will be in there...

what exactly is it you need to know?

Welp, firstly thanks for replying :)

And, I have no idea where to put the wires that came with the kit. Like where to connect them too and whatnot .. if soldering is requred. Basically, I have no idea what is what in the fuse box so I haven't got a clue. Was really hoping for some help :(

Right well I had a kit very similar (just another different colour set of wires I guess!) and I also have exactly the same car. If you open up the fusebox (two plastic screws use a 10p to get em out) then there's everything you need. If I remember correctly most of the wires you need are coming out the back of a 40 pin black connector by the side of all the fuses.

To attach the wires soldering isn't necessary personally I just used a penknife to strip a few mm of wire, twisted the one from the kit round it, then put a bit of insulating tape round the join. However if you want I'm sure you can think of a more professional way of doing it!

I have a list here I got from my ebay seller of what to connect to where. But I'm not with my car right now so I can't check that I followed them exactly... there was a couple of things unlcear which I had to guess, but it all worked out :D

The main ones you need are the locking/unlocking wires. These should be a green/white wire for lock and a blue/purple one for unlock. looking at your diagram I'm not sure which ones these are, but I think that the 6 "locking wires" need to be grouped together in two sets of three, at least that's what mine was like. Is there a seperate diagram that shows this else you're not going to get anywhere!!!

I can give you some of the others but let me know how you get on with finding those first to see if we're barking up the wrong tree!

Hello, I got this diagram. I don't know if it is of any help, thanks for the help so far though...

Heres the diagram.

Thanks

Yep thought there would be something like that. The punto has a negative control signal so if I'm reading your diagram right you need your white wire connected to the green/white lock wire on the car, your white/black wire connected to the blue/purple unlock wire on the car, and the yellow and yellow/black wires earthed someplace.

Hope that helps, do you see where I'm coming from?

Hey guys! Thanks for the info! Really appreciated! Still a bit confused though, only some wires will be used? Whats the rest for? There's like 3 out of 10 wires being used... is there anything missing like hooking up parking lights and so forth?

I have another diagram that I copied from the instructions, these are the last of the paint skills lol...

Thanks alot

no scrape wires with pen knife lol, use scotch conectors, them blue things
Ouch sounds like it cost money, haha. Use them if you want to be a bit professional but the crude approach worked for me :D

No there are other wires you need to connect, those are just for the actual unlocking. There are unused wires though for if the car has other types of locking.

You also need (from your first diagram) to connect up:

-Your red wire to a positive.
-Your black to a negative.
-something to the indicators (I'm unsure here because I had two wires, which I had to connect to the pink and pink/white wires in the punto. But you seem to only have one (labled blue) which I assume is the indicators but I don't know why there's only one.
-I guess that's it because the pink one where it says trunk must be for the boot which you're not doing.

Cool, thanks for all the info - REALLY helpful :)

Bit confused on stupid stuff that you probably find mind-numbingly easy ... how do i ground a wire? and what do you mean when you say connect to a positive and negative, where do those wires go?

Sorry to be a bother, I think those are the last things I need to know before I go and rip out every wire in the car :D

Ant

Right well the positive needs to be to a +12V wire somewhere. It says in my instructions use the 6mm white/red wire but I'm pretty sure I used something else for some reason...

Ground is the same as the negative, basically the negative terminal of the battery is attached to the body of the car so either will do. The important thing is that you need 12V between the two - you can use a multimeter to test them to make sure (the important thing is that it is a constant 12V even if the engine is off).

Basically that probably won't help much, maybe someone else can tell you where to find a positive wire because I can't remember which I used! I don't see my car again till next week. For the ground wires I attached them to the exposed large bolt on the bodywork near the fusebox.

That's pretty much all I've got I hope you can work it out from there :D Have fun.

Oh believe me, I'll try to work it out lol.
Okay this is the last time i'll bother you though, I opened it up and i found a birage of wires

There seems to be more than one colour thats the same, I have no idea what to do. Plus, am I supposed to cut the wire and attatch the wire from my kit? I don't know what to do! *useless*

I took a picture of the panel so hopefully you could help me...

So many purdy pictures :) Not paint this time though :(

No whatever you do don't cut them - just attach them onto the wire someplace. I don't really know how those clips dave showed work but I think you can just clip them on without stripping the wire??

The black connector with the purple catch (on the left)is where you should find most of the wires. You don't really need to disconnect it but it's probably easier, what you need is the bundle of wires coming out of it. Take of the tape keeping them all together and start searching for the ones you want. The indicator ones and the lock/unlock ones are in there, as I say I'm not too sure about the power one I think I got it from somewhere else.

Loads of the wires are similar colours but as I remember it's the indicator ones which there are loads of, as I recall I just connected to the first ones that came to hand and it worked. So either I'm very lucky or they all go to the same place somehow! That's the pink and pink/white (by which I mean striped by the way) ones.

Rich, Scotch connectors are very useful (still infact some consider them a bodge) , you simply put one side of it on the wire you want to connect to and your second wire on the otherside, you then close using pliers and it splices the wires for you, you then clip it and voila.

Like that but there are many different styles which allow you to do different things.

Known as scotch locks, scotchloc, scotch blocks, scotch connectors.

Woah what makes you think I want some! They cost money bodging is free :D

Thanks for explaining though :D

A couple of quid or risk a short circuit burning your car? Exactly :)

I only addressed it to you since you didn't know what they were from a post I read.

Erm I wasn't being nasty I was just joking. :)

FYI though I'm not risking anything. I'm not stoopid. My way is fine thank-you-very-much, I even have an A* GCSE electronics to prove it :D

Okay I'm in desperate need of help ... I've connected all of them, just how you told me - even using scotch connecters! man those things are a god send!

I've wired up the red wire to a positive - i know this is correct because i used one of those thingys that detects currents and it was live even tho the car was off.
I've connected everything else but still, it doesn't work.
I connected my white wire to the green/white wire (lock) in the punto - there was 2, but still it don't work! I tried both of them but no luck!
my white/black wire i was told to connect to blue/purple (unlock) but nothing worked. there was a fat purple wire, so i tried a blue/white one - nothing. I'm seriously doing my head in, i've been trying different combo's for the past 2 hours but nothing! Am I doing something wrong?

Cheers so much in advance!

Ant

Allright well there are probably only 4 that are necessary for it to work, positive, negative and lock and unlock. Don't worry about the indicators because they are just an extra.

If you're sure there is a +12V between the positive and the negative, the lock sounds like it's in the right place, it sounds like it's the unlock that needs attention...

By blue/purple it means blue and purple striped so there should be one with both of those colours on it in the main bundle (coming out of the connector on the left). Can you find it?

Aha. I've found the internet version of the piece of paper I am looking at. Go to www.cobra.it, enter the password I am gonna PM you, then chose Fiat>page2>punto petrol '99 on. Then you pretty much have all the info I had when I did mine. Having said that remember mine was a different kit to yours :D
