Hi guys,

I have a Punto JTD with 80,000 on the clock. I've had a new clutch installed around 15,000 miles ago. I was considering getting it remapped (as I am getting bored of the current power) but I wasn't sure if the clutch would cope (no clutch dumps, just general booting). How are you guys finding yours?

Hi mate,

I have a remapped JTD. Depending on how far you take the map (most people go for around 120-125 BHP and 200 ish ft-lb torque) then the standard clutch and gearbox can handle it. You need to make sure that you are fully engaged in gear and your foot is fully off the clutch pedal before you floor the accelerator (as should be normal practice with any car), if you do this then clutch slip is rare. I occasionally get a small bit in second, but only if really going for it. But if you drive it smoothly there isnt much more clutch ware compared to standard. I think my clutch it on around 36k miles since my remap, and last time I looked at it, there was no significant ware.

Main thing to note, is that because yours has done 80k you want to make sure the turbo is in good condition, and that you change the oil and filter every 6k and use good qulaity oil. If you do that you should be fine.

Oh and i know im biast, but you will defiantely be pleased with the results, a good map totally transforms the JTD.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Thanks for your reply. Good to know! What figures are yours putting out and what's the milage? Am guessing you tend to accelerate above 2,000 RPM to avoid the judder?

The car is serviced very often so am sure the turbo is in good condition (I certainly hope so!).

Hi mate,

Mines on 112k miles now. I use it mainly as a motorway muncher. I dont get any clutch judder, it pulls smoothly from about 1.5 krpm to 4 krpm.

If its serviced regularly the JTD is a very strong engine. Main thing with a remapped one is oil changes, and being gentle with the clutch.

I was under the impression it judders if you boot it from 2,000 RPM in high gears?

I think my exhaust is blowing very slightly (a small hole before the cat) - should I get this fixed before the remap? I've been told it shouldn't reduce power, but can increase it?

You shouldn't drive like that, it stresses the clutch far too much especially with the amount of torque a mapped JTD has.
