Technical Red Key??

I have just red on the parkers website that you should not buy a Fiat Cinq if it is missing some red key??

I bought one yesterday (see previous post!!) and it does not have this, can anyone shead some light on this and put my mind at rest, is it vital or can you live without it.

Basically the red key allows you to re-enable the car to start if the immobilser was activated I think. It is also needed to get new keys cut as well I think.

Depends.
If you have blue keys, then they are the transponder type - the red one will only be needed if you have dire ecu failure or need to get new blues cut.

If you have black keys, you don't have the immobiliser fitted, the change over was somewhere about 95 or 96, not sure which.

As long as you don't lose all the blue keys you'll be ok. I have never needed my red key in 3 1/2 years and 34,000 miles of <s>severe thrashing</s> careful ownership.

There are places that can clone blue keys (e.g. make more blues from blues) and make new reds, but if the worst came to the worst you could just get an ecu and red key from a scrapper.

Hi Pete, you must be the worldwide authority on these cars every post i read you come up with the best/detailed answers!!

I only have one blue one, so can i just go to a shop and copy the blue one, use the copy and keep the original blue one safe??

Will a standard while-u-wait highstreet shoe/key shop copy this?

I'd ask about copying the keys, someone did tell me that some high street keycutting shops can do them, but I've never had one done. There's places on the web that advertise, look at

Hi Pete,

I went into town today and there is a key shop in the high street, they said that they can do it. I took in my blue key and they said they cut and programme the key, for £25, does this sound good??

The last thing i want to happen is do this, go to use the spare key and the immobiliser kicks in!

If this did, would i just be able to put the original blue in the ignition and it would start?? Or would the red one (which i dont have!!!!!!) be required.

The immobiliser kicks in as soon as you take the key out of the ignition anyway, and deactivates when you turn the ignition on. As far as I know, if you try to start it with a wrong key, the 'CODE' light just stays on on the instrument panel. £25 is about the same as Fiat quoted me to make a new blue, but that was from the red one.

The key shop get the blank keys in Wednesday/Thursday so I will get the blue one copied, the guy said they cut the key then programme it so i am assuming that it will be cool, will post back if it works!!
