Technical RECALL: Service Solution for Suspension Springs

yeah all write to watch dog and watch the re-sell value of your cars fall to some thing silly when its broadcast :(

The re-sale value of these cars couldn’t fall much more or I would give mine away.
My 2003 Multiwagon, which has every optional extra, you can put on, was £19500 new. It is now worth about £5000 trade in, or £6000 if I was lucky enough to sell it private. Fiat should be exposed for the crap after sales service they don’t provide when things go wrong.

The ones I have done have had the 'containing' plate' fitted afterwards.

Thanks again for the reply.

There's something else i'm interested to know and I hope it's not too stupid a question. Are the shock absorbers different on all models of Stilo or do some models use the same ones? More specifically, are the ones on the Abarth different from those used say on the 1.9 JTD?

Maybe i'm just paranoid but it seems to me that the (standard & original) shock absorbers I have on my Abarth have too large a diameter for the 'containing' plate to be fitted. Therefore the dealership must be replacing them with shock absorbers of a different size for the plate to fit. How can I be sure that the replacement shocks have the same performance as the ones I have now?

Ok the shocks on you Abarth will differ from other models but to be honest you will have to check whether or not they are the same as the JTD. Now the question regarding to size of the shocks would possibly be that Abarth shocks could be a different diameter for the plate to fit and if they are Fiat will have made a specific kit for that strut and also you have to find out from KoA if he fitted competition struts to the car because if he did then the performance issue will defiantly be different if he has only used the eibach springs and stock shocks you will have the same performance so you need to find out [as I have said ] whether or not he changed the shocks (y)

The reason the dealer is proposing to change the shocks is that there is no kit that fits them. I want to find out before the work is done whether fitting different size ones (presumably thinner so that a kit fits) will adversely effect the handling.

Also, forgive my ignorance since I'm still quite new to the forum, but what has this got to do with KoA?

Nothing forgive me I thought I was answering to Carcrazy who bought Marks car  Eee gods old age  but you will need to find out if you have after market springs or shocks as after market spring dont need the modification done there hasnt been one reported breakage of a set of these so basically the post could apply to you also and thats the reason the spring bodge dont fit

No problem - there are so many posts here that its an easy mistake to make!

I have not had any after market mods made to my Abarth. I've owned it since new and have not changed anything. Basically it seems to me that the spring bodge doesn't fit so they are wanting to put on different size shocks so it does fit. My concern is that I'll end up with down rated shocks and even less positive handling at the front end!

The only thing amiss here is Fiat’s knowledge of their own cars and the crap solution to loads of broken coil springs.:worship: God help us all.

Hi guys - please be patient, things are progressing well, VOSA are collecting all information regarding spring breakage and associated poor spring catcher device, Fiat have acknowledged my complaint (Fiat guy on phone says he is not aware of the spring problem) Fiat have been in touch with my local dealer and informed them of my complaint/safety concerns etc, and have returned with a very different reply to original, stating that the springs would very possibly be replaced or monies paid refunded by fiat (subject to service manager submitting a claim on my behalf), I have been advised by Vosa to book car in for recall work to be carried out, this puts responsibility back on to Fiat, also requested to send broken spring sent to Vosa next week for futher info.

If any of you have remains of broken springs or any more pics etc then please forward to myself asap.

Regards
Mark

Nice post topmark I was in dealers yesterday [took wife's GP in for recall they are one of the better fiat dealers and have I have always had a welcome and work is done well.. we talked over the fact that fiat had not reimbursed me or dealer for the work done on the springs and drop links on my stilo but I think I will print this post off and show them and hopefully they will have another go at fiat UK over this :bang: I am quite happy to continue having a go at fiat if a result is forth coming I told him about Jonny abarths car who they recently had replaced the springs on and even the dealer agreed that the solution is NOT satisfactory[he gave me a wink and a smile which said it all ] so I will be keeping you all appraised of the situation (y)

Hey, just phoned up my local dealer about the recall, was told to phone back in a month because they don't have any parts. Surely FIAT should know to have the part in stock before issuing a recall?

Any reported spring breakages on 04 cars? Will not be very happy if it breaks while waiting for the recall.

I can now tell you that this spring bodge comes in to catagories the 1.2 1.4 1.6 uses the same one and the 1.8 JTD 2.4 uses a different one and their not interchangable dealer also said to me book your car in to get it done to cover yourself incase anything should happen further with the springs .. but I have new ones fitted :D you never know whats around the corner he said .. ok when can I get it done I replied ..its a 1.6 isnt it .. Yes :) .. sorry no parts in stock .. typical  but I asked him to register the fact that he couldnt carry out the work for the reason stated :D

I think your dealer is absolutely correct to recommend that you book your car in for the bodge job, in case anything should happen in the future.
In light of what my dealer told me, when I booked my car in today, I would recommend anyone on this forum who has a Stilo, which is included in this recall, to get it in for the bodge job ASAP. This will then place any future failure squarely back onto Fiat.
How true the following statement is I cannot say, because I am certain from many of the postings on this forum that Fiat and their dealers, haven’t got a clue what they are doing or saying to customers.
However, here goes! When I questioned the dealer, about why I had not received a letter about this recall, considering I bought the car direct from him and he has been notified about the recall. His answer was that Fiat is doing the recall in batches and I would have received a letter very soon. What after I got killed!:bang: This seems about par for Fiat.
When I asked him about the recall work, he told me it was to replace the bottom spring cups, not fit the bodge job, this would take about an hour to remove the springs and fit new cups. The plot thickens? I also told him I have had two-rear springs break and I got the standard Fiat dumb reply, this recall only covers the front springs. :tosser:
I have now found the leading British Car Inspection Experts through the AA and I am considering employing them to look at my last broken spring, which I kept.
If they come up with what I believe is the problem, substandard springs not fit for their purpose, this should help my legal action against Fiat,
I will post again after my bodge job has been done on Thursday.
Happy motoring

Well a little of topic but the item below are available on ebay ATM and whats more they have been reduced in price by over £100 ..as I have said so many times in the past the best way forward is to dump the OEM parts and improve your stilo. good luck with your future case against fiat bombay if you succeed the flood gates will open and your name will go down in history in this section

I had booked my 2002 stilo abarth in for the spring recall for today, then on Friday, 4 days before it was going to go in the front drivers side coil snapped. Luckily at low speed, not on the motorway. I asked the recovery vehicle to take it to Fiat dealer as it was booked in soon-ish and I told them it must be related to the recall and Fiat should pay.

They said no as the recall was for the dampers not the coil, and I'd have to pay £300 for new coils (yep both) and then see if anything else was damaged, and I guess pay for that too. Also they said the parts for the recall are on back order and not in stock so they cant do the work this week, weven though they let me book it in!

Does anyone reckon I get Fiat to pay for the broken spring replacement, and how best to go about it? Didnt like the way they were trying to fob me off saying it was unrelated when it blatantly is.

Especially for what is a very dangerous fault.

Also will demand a courtesy car now until parts come in for recall as now carl-less(n)

Definitely they should fix it for Free (both side too).

I'd PM Bombay who I'm sure will give good legal advice (y)
