Technical RECALL: Service Solution for Suspension Springs

Cheers, I've PM'd Bombay.

Dealership has just called, repair works and recall works done no further damage but still not willing to pick up the coil replacement cost of £297.39.

Guess I will pay when I pick it up tomorrow as I need my Stilo back, but will try everything to claim back from Fiat. Cheers for your help

Hey, just phoned up my local dealer about the recall, was told to phone back in a month because they don't have any parts. Surely FIAT should know to have the part in stock before issuing a recall?

Any reported spring breakages on 04 cars? Will not be very happy if it breaks while waiting for the recall.

You could be unlucky like Nick. r on this forum. I do hope not. His spring broke 4 days before he was due to take his car in for the recall work. I have sent him a private message suggesting what he does, about his dealer refusing to pay for the broken spring.

More to the point you could even be unluckier, someone could get seriously hurt or even killed in your car, if a spring breaks and blows the tyre at high speed. God forbid.

Write to your dealer and tell him that as a result of him and Fiat not having these parts available to carry out this safety work under the VOSA recall Ref: R2006/184, you are requesting a lone car until these parts are available, otherwise you will be holding them both responsible for any damage to your car, or personal injury to anyone in your car.

Let us all know what his response is.

I took my 2003 Multiwagon in today, to have the front springs bodge job done.
They said it would take one hour and it did. (y) However it looks dangerously close to the tyre it’s supposed to be protecting? :worship:
I also gave the Service Manager a letter claiming damages under The Sale of Goods Act, for the other broken springs and some other problems on the car, which I have paid for out of my own pocket.
I told him if I did not receive a satisfactory resolution to these problems within 30 days I would issue court proceedings.
I will now wait to hear his response. :chin:

I have decided to NOT have the "Spring Catcher Mod" fitted at this time because as far as I can see this will actually target the broken spring remains towards the inner tyre wall, I strongly feel that this is more risk than to allow a broken spring to displace around the remaining un-guarded strutt base plate.
Replace your original fiat springs with aftermarket type as they certainly can not be weaker than the failing originals

As prieviously reported I have submitted complaints to VOSA and have also given other facts and information (including remains of broken spring) relating to this very poor remedial action from Fiat.

I do hope you get a positive response from your dealer and that this situation may change for the better before some poor motorist and their family get seriously injured.

I do urge you to think twice with regards to having this mod fitted, or at least for time being.

You area man after my own heart with regards to this problem I totaly agree with your comments and also think the same about the bodge they call a solution my dealer advised me to have it fitted just to cover myself from fiat just incase my two new springs should brake again [both paid by for by me ]but I agree it looks just as dangerous with it fitted as it will be with out it ..makes me so damn  mad this issue aftermarket springs and shocks are the best way to go and have said this constantly through out this thread (y)

:bang: I was at my dealer to fix my bulb and then they discover my spring has falling off to the tyre, but was lucky it never touched my tyre, am on queue waiting for my replacement.:bang:

buy why is it just the front springs?

I totally agree with both you and PNL, that the real solution to these breaking springs is to replace them with different springs of a better quality.(y)
If you look on the VOSA website you will see that the breaking spring problem on the Multipla, is also being described as a result of intensive use of salt on our roads, however in this case, Fiat are replacing the springs with those a new type? (y)
Why are they doing a bodge job on the Stilos! :bang: I personally think the answer is related to the number of recalls Multipla 10230 cars Stilo 44100 cars. This speaks for itself.
As I said in my last posting the Stilo bodge job looks dangerously close to the tyres it is meant to protect, which concerns me, (n) however I do think, as PNL’s dealer advised him to have this done to cover himself against Fiat in the future. It is important from a legal point of view to have this done as soon as possible, so that any future damage, injury or God forbid,:worship: loss of life, is placed squarely on Fiats shoulders. Otherwise they will, say you have contributed to the problem by not having this done.
I am also considering having one of the leading motor vehicle inspectors in this country, look at my car and the last spring, which I kept. This is not cheap at £195 but at least it will give me the answers I need and the peace of mind that the car is safe, after having this bodge job done.

Re: Stilo spring recall

did u pay for anything during the repair?

If this question is aimed at me I have posted what happened to me in this thread some where [if you care to read back ]:D but in my case I paid for every thing except the labour charge from the dealer as he did the second spring after inspection of my car.. he was claiming the cost of this back off fiat but sadly for some unknown reason unknown to both of us Fiat did not pay him or reimburse me for the parts I bought ..and they dont want to say why each time I have tackled them about it  but in my opinion its all to do with money [ they dont want to pay any out ] (n)

Lee

how can you tell?

By your photo I can just make out the drop link joint and the spring is wrapped around the link adn should be positioned on the mounting point so thats gonna cost you a drop link as well as with the force of the spring wrapping its self around it they bend ..:bang: sorry to be the bearer of the bad news :bang: have you contacted anyone yet ?

spoke to one fiat garage want 238.00 to replace both springs.

How much extra are the drop links.

is there any action i can take with Fiat UK? appox millage is 80k on 2002 abrath

Fortunately I can do the job myself and its a bitch having to pay that out when in our opinions it shouldn't happen in the first place (n) phone fiat UK and speak to customer service and explain you front spring has snapped and ask for a case number as you wish to take the matter further then go to your dealer and ask him to contact fiat on your behalf and hope for the best cos believe me its a lottery whether they say yes or no.. the drop links are £13 give or take from fiat Good luck keep us informed (y) and hang onto the broken spring dont let them keep it ;) get some pics as well of the spring as it is now (y)

Spoke to Fiat and explained my case and was told that they will send it up to fiat HQ, as i come to think about i have never rec'd any recall letter for this, is this something that they send record del? i won't hold my breath on the outcome as i guessing i will have to fork out to get these done.

Do i have to have both replaced or just the one thats gone?

Lee

I just got both my springs replaced for nothing, one snapped so Reg Vardys in Stockton replaced em both for nothing :slayer:
